The Social and Emotional Learning in Washington State Schools: Building Foundations and Strategies module is designed to be a part of the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction's (OSPI) professional learning constellation of topics. It can be used by Washington Educational Service Districts (ESD) and LEAs for administering clock hours. Clock hours are not available to individuals who take the course on their own. Intended Audience This module is designed for educators, administrators, school staff, others professionals and parents who interact with youth as a means to help them build and improve their understanding of social emotional skills. Structure of the Module This online module has been designed in six distinct learning segments. Learning Segment 1: Introduction to SEL Learning Segment 2: Embedding SEL Schoolwide Learning Segment 3: Creating a Professional Culture Based on SEL Learning Segment 4: Integrating SEL into Culturally Responsive Classrooms Learning Segment 5: Trauma Informed Social Emotional Learning Learning Segment 6: Identifying and Selecting Evidence-Based Programs Although the online module can be completed by an individual, the learning is significantly more impactful if it is done collectively by those who will be implementing SEL. Throughout the online module, suggestions on ways in which to engage in the learning in a group setting are provided. This lesson plan can is geared for social studies, but can also be used in other content areas. Trauma can result when a group of people are forced away from their schools, friends, businesses/work, neighborhoods/communities, then incarcerated without due process, under difficult conditions. Students explore how historical and traumatic events such as Japanese American incarceration affect communities for the long term and how communities have worked to heal. Note: This is not a ‘typical’ social studies lesson on Japanese American incarceration. It will involve working with material regarding trauma. Activities 1 and 2 cover life skills and can be offered in the classroom at any time. (It may be ideal to teach this toward the beginning of the school year) Activity 3 is a foundational piece on what intergenerational trauma is. Activities 4, 5 and 6 go deeper into this topic.

A team of teachers at Centennial Elementary School in Olympia, WA, developed book boxes to share across the school each month centered on identifying feelings and developing empathy for others. Each month one or two picture book titles are paired with a Word of the Month. The media literacy teacher team developed materials, including a presentation slideshow, a video read-aloud, and discussion questions. The principal and teachers share the books with students, facilitating discussions for students to identify their own feelings and develop a toolbox for regulating emotions. Students use a Likert scale, developed by Jennifer LaGarde and Darren Hudgins, to identify emotional responses and develop vocabulary to describe and deal with their feelings. They are then given the opportunity to read more about each image and discuss how that changes their response.
