Meaningful STEM learning can happen at home as we problem-solve around the house and make sense of intriguing phenomena around us! Join us as we explore plants and animals in nature and use them as inspiration to solve an everyday problem for our family!
Material Type: Activity/Lab
Meaningful STEM learning can happen at home! Embark on a journey with your students to answer the driving question: How can we design a solution to prevent Washington’s coast from eroding?
Material Type: Activity/Lab
This resource is a collection of monthly at-home STEAM challenges that students in Grades K-6 can compete using objects found around the house.
Material Type: Activity/Lab, Homework/Assignment
In this activity, students will use their knowledge of area and perimeter to create a racetrack. Once they have the correct specifications they will guide their car through the track using the properties of magnets.
Material Type: Activity/Lab
In this unit, students will learn about the 4Cs (communication, collaboration, creation, and critical thinking) through literature-based engineering challenges. Each lesson focuses on one "C" and one read-aloud. This unit is geared for grades 2-3 but could be adapted to any elementary grade level. COMMUNICATION - Click Clack Moo COLLABORATION - Iggy Peck Architect CRITICAL THINKING - Rosie Revere Engineer CREATION - Galimoto

Let's explore some science and math around why seatbelts work. Check out the career video from Billie Jo Deal, Transportation Safety Coordinator from the Oregon Department of Transportation, about how she works to keep people safe on the roads. Then, in the Discovery Challenge, we build crash models and calculate restraining forces. This lesson introduces NGSS standards, and those standards are listed in the lesson. Videos are part of the Explore Science Club series, an asynchronous online learning program using YouTube videos that connects elementary and middle school students to STEM professionals through hands-on lessons where students explore science and engineering practices related to the highlighted careers. There is an option to use FlipGrid, an online video recording platform for students to share their discoveries More info: www.go-stem.org
Material Type: Activity/Lab
In this unit of study students learn how an animal's body structure and behavior help it survive in its habitat. This unit integrates nine STEM attributes and was developed as part of the South Metro-Salem STEM Partnership's Teacher Leadership Team. Any instructional materials are included within this unit of study.
Material Type: Unit of Study
Animals have traits physical and behavioral that help them survive. Some traits help animals be more successful in survival than others.
Material Type: Activity/Lab
Maker Clubs introduce students to the making movement, the idea that hands on learning and creating things from scratch lays the foundation for future success, especially in STEM fields.

Getting Started: This lesson is designed to be used within the heat transfer unit as an engineering design project. My goal is to teach students: The difference in heat conductivity of different materials. Engage students in thinking about the principles of engineering (designing to meet criteria determined by the desired result). Total class time: 170 minutes (2 class blocks, 1 period for demo, in-class design, 1 period for student-requested informational experiments).
Material Type: Activity/Lab
Resource suggestions to explore and consider as a way to support your family learning during school closures.

Let's practice thinking like a scientist! Check out the video from Dr. Tavis Forrester, Research Wildlife Biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Then, in the Discovery Challenge video, we'll unlock mysteries that surround us by using the 3 I's of Scientist - I Notice, I Wonder, It Reminds Me Of. Lesson Credit: BEETLESproject.org. This lesson introduces NGSS standards, and those standards are listed in the lesson. Secondary educators across Lebanon County, Pennsylvania developed lesson plans to integrate the Pennsylvania Career Education and Work Standards with the content they teach. This work was made possible through a partnership between the South Central PA Workforce Investment Board (SCPa Works) and Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13) and was funded by a Teacher in the Workplace Grant Award from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. This lesson plan was developed by one of the talented educators who participated in this project during the 2018-2019 school year.
Material Type: Lesson Plan
Students research climate data and play the role of a scientist trying to interpret the condition of Earth's atmosphere.
