Twelfth Night: Dramatic Dialogue Workshop | Shakespeare in the Schools

This workshop is an introduction to how actors build characters and relationships, transforming the written words to actions and presence on stage. Students will explore Shakespeare’s use of words, rhythms, and language in Twelfth Night through activities that exercise vocal acting skills. “No Hablo Español” explores the conflicted cultural identity of a Latina high school student who can’t speak Spanish. Playwright Rosa Estevez explains why parents born in a Spanish-speaking country might prefer English for their children. People behind the scenes describe the play’s fresh pathways for discussing cultural identity, the importance of authenticity and language, and the role of the dramaturg in advocating for the playwright. The play was part of the New Voices Young Playwrights Festival at Actors Theatre of Louisville.

The Art of Romare Bearden

The visual narratives and abstractions of this preeminent African American artist explore the places where he lived and worked: the rural South, Pittsburgh, Harlem, and the Caribbean. Bearden's central themes: religion, jazz and blues, history, literature, and the realities of black life he endured throughout his remarkable career in watercolors, oils, and especially collages and photomontages from the 1940s through the 1980s.
