What do we mean by "we teach students, not just content"? How does that affect your teacher practice and student learning?
by Nancy Gardner 8 years, 10 months agoThink about this idea--while keeping in mind the 21st needs of our graduating students--with changes due to the "global, digital, portable" (and community) shifts in our world.
I believe that the quote means that the assignments and activities students do are part of their cognitive development, not just something to do to "kill time". Students don't normally understand that, which is why I believe a teacher should point out the benefits of knowing how to analyze a text or practicing public speaking. If we think of an English class as part of a life lesson, then we need to search texts that portray universal themes; such as: peace, family values, beliefs, etc.
