Hi Don,

Thank you for your share! I have found OER useful for courses introducing special topics. I have found interactive activities that reinforce concepts and can be fun for students to complete as a form of self-assessment. I have also found videos and visual aids to help students literally see what we are learning about. Most importantly, the visual aids I have found are educational and appropriate and have been used by other instructors. I intend to continue using OER resources and work my way until I can actually come up with my own textbook.

Paulina, I love the concept of special topic, contextualized courses. For example, I taught LSCS (Literacy, Sport, Culture, & Society) ENG 101-102 for four years, engaging all student-athletes with related content and assignments. It'd be awesome to have a network of professors that incorporate sports-related topics in their courses. OER can be a portal to connect special topic educators to share.

Hi Billy,

That's a fantastic idea. I've been in a few conversations with colleagues about adding a sports stats option for the student athletes or students interested in the topic. An OER would be a great pathway to do something like this.

Billy,

You have a fabulous style that connects directly with your students! I find that giving my students the opportunity to choose a subject matter in their essays produces higher-quality work because they are engaging more with a subject they are interested in. OER is a portal! Love that!

Blessings,

Elissa

Hi Paulina,

The resources that you list here certainly are encouraging for someone who would like to add additional interactive activities into my OER curriculum! As an OER newbie, I have not yet found videos and visual aids either. That doesn;t mean the resources aren't out there! I can't wait to find them! Thank you!

Hi Joanna, and Xiadun,

I echo Xiadun's words. This OER training is going to valuable in providing guidance on building OER textbooks both for 130 and 107.

Thank you,

Hi Don,

As a new professor I have been very grateful that I have not needed to create my course content and was able to utilize OER instead.  However, I absolutely want to build my own in time to increase the materials available for my field.

For sure, Don. Central Arizona College's ENG Dept., before I was hired, created an OER ENG 101-102 online textbook, and it has supplemented my core classes so well!

Ashley Garneau 1 month, 2 weeks ago

Hi Joanna and all,

Thank you for facilitating the OER webinar. The information has been most helpful, but I'm still struggling with locating OERs for Nursing, specifically. Any suggestions?

Hi Ashley,

Funny meeting you here ;)

I found quite a few in the Pressbooks OER directory, and what's nice about that is we can copy those into open.maricopa.edu and edit or Remix them. This applies to the OpenRN textbook series, too, as they are in pressbooks. The new openstax series will be completed this month with the release of the Med Surg book but I haven't figured out how to remix those.... I can shoot you an email with links if you want.

Best,

Hilary

Hi Hilary,

Thanks for reaching out! Yes, please send me the links. I am relatively new to the OER experience, so appreciate your expertise and resource-sharing! Thanks again Hilary! :)

Hello Hilary,

I would love more information on the open.maricopa.edu. I work for MCCCD also and hope to move into using OER and moving away from a textbook.

Hi all,

We currently use the Open RN series that Hilary mentioned, but I did a have been searching on Google and found many other databases besides OERcommons. They also have lessons on how to create OER from start to finish. I downloaded one of the resouces from Moore & Neil (Commonweath of Learning)

Hilary Daley 1 month, 2 weeks ago

Hi Elizabeth,

Here is the link to pressbooks OER directory. https://pressbooks.directory/

If you see things in there that you want to remix, save the URL and go to open.maricopa.edu (you sign in with your MEID), hit ‘clone a book’ and enter the URL. Then, you own a copy to edit :)

Best,

Hilary Daley

Yes, Open RN has alot of fun rescourse that can be used for nursing. There are also some really fun Virtual simulation resources that are built with H5p that integrate into canvas really well.

I love the idea of OERs; however, i am finding it difficult to find quality content for my content area which is Early Childhood Education.  Some information has been located on Child Development. However, more specific content that focuses on the various domains of early childhood is hard to come by.  Suggestions??

Hello Victoria,

I teach Spanishc, and I have the same problem. I was able to find isolated activities but not a good text book. I wonderder if I am not doing the right research.

I have found it takes a lot of Googling and patience. Try https://pressbooks.directory/ and https://openstax.org/

Good luck!

Teresa Handy 3 weeks ago

Hi Victoria,
I also teach these types of courses and have struggled to find good resources that focus on early childhood education. I don't have any, but I would love to connect with you and explore together. Maybe we can work on some?

Best,
Teresa
