This lesson is a spin-off of the popular television show Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? Students are chosen one by one to pick an exercise card that will also have a point value on it. Once a card is selected as a class, students perform that exercise for one minute to see if they can outlast their teacher. If the teacher falls first then the students get the points but if the teacher outlasts the students then he/she gets the points. This lesson concentrates mostly on the use of psychomotor skills.

Painted Story Quilt (art + social studies; art + literature) Quilt-making spans multiple centuries and many different cultures. It’s an art form that can teach basic math skills, record history, recycle cast-off materials and encourage cooperative efforts within a group...just to name a few ideas! Artist and author Faith Ringgold is renowned for her painted story quilts. She surrounds her narrative paintings with a quilted fabric border, creating visual art that tells a story in color, texture and pattern. In this lesson, students select a story to illustrate — a book they’ve read or a story of their own to share — then paint a scene on fabric pieces using watersoluble pastels and watercolor paint. The remaining fabric is painted with complimenting colors and patterns to make a border, and glued when dry to a piece of felt. Students are encouraged to share swatches with one another, just as fabrics have been created and shared in quiltmaking for centuries. As an option, students define key shapes with embroidery stitches and add beads. Grade Levels K-12 Note: instructions and materials based on a class of 25 students. Adjust as needed.

“Rhythm in Layers” Low-Relief Sculpture with Design in Mind Layer by layer, piece by piece, students assemble a three-dimensional collage using simple pre-cut wood and cardboard shapes built up from a base. Because the design exists on multiple levels rather than a single plane, the relationship of each individual element to the whole must be considered. This lesson can be used to illustrate the following design principles: Rhythm – repetition and placement of similar colors, shapes and lines throughout the collage will provide a sense of order and unity. Balance – whether placed symmetrically or asymmetrically, collage materials should be arranged so that the visual weight is evenly distributed. Movement – connecting shapes, lines and colors should lead the viewer on a path into, out of and around the entire piece.
