Guiding the Inquiry: Using the Information Search Process

Guided Inquiry (GI), also known as the Information Search Process (ISP), is a research-based model for teaching information-based inquiry through the collaboration of the school librarian and classroom teacher. A Powerpoint presentation WITH NOTES divides the module into three sections: 1) How do we learn? describes constructivist learning theory developed by Piaget, Dewey, Bruner, Kelly, and Vygotsky and the research on why students plagiarize.2) The centerpiece for this section is the Information Search Process, a staged model that guides information users through Task Initiation, Exploration, Topic Selection, Focus Formulation, Collection of Information, Presentation, and Assessment. The ISP takes a multi-dimensional approach to learning that includes thoughts, feelings, and actions of the information user as they progress through these stages. This section also includes authentic learning tasks as the context for the ISP. 3) Interventions. Since the model is research-based, it is predicative. School librarians can anticipate confusion, frustration, and information behaviors such as selecting information that indicate successful or unsuccessful progression through the ISP stages. The concept of intervention is critical to Guided Inquiry as the school librarian, in collaboration with the classroom teacher, diagnoses the problem and provides an intervention that enables the information user to move from one stage to the next. The goal of this module is to familiarize students with ISP stages, provide print and digital tools for each of the ISP stages, Each section of the module has a learning task for students that requires them to apply what they have learned.

This instructional product provides the student with the opportunity to assess his own skill level and address learning gaps that might affect research and other information-seeking performance.Pot of Gold also provides a quick review or update for the experienced researcher, particularly when interdisciplinary research requires seeking information from unfamiliar sources.

Image-ing Our Foremothers: Art as a Means of Connecting with Women's History

This is an 8 week experience for the college student that begins by setting a learning context through using library resources, especially online databases, for locating images and art that reflect a chosen research topic and creating a mural that demonstrates the students’ comprehension of the chosen topic. The experience includes conducting research on 3 significant events or people in women’s US history. The written research will be accompanied by images or art that the student has chosen (described) as reflective of, or related to the researched event or person. In order to determine the students’ level of information literacy, the research will include a detailed description of how the students located the images. The students will also draw or describe a personalized sketch of one of the researched events or people. The culmination of the research is the design and painting of a collaborative mural depicting the students' research topics. This Reusable Learning Object (RLO) was created out of the desire to infuse university courses with information literacy or research activities. A traditional research project on significant events or people in history is enhanced with the discovery and analyzing of art and images within the context of history. Analysis not only includes written text but the painting of a mural. The RLO is structured in a way that allows for easy replication and alteration to a variety of subjects and learning levels.

In this project students will report on a book by describing how they would turn that book into a motion picture. After reading and studying the main components of their novel (character, plot, conflict, climax and denouement), students will use their imaginations to explain how they would cast and direct the movie versions. This project also provides enrichment activities where in the students will access archived materials such as the Academy Awards Data Base, movie posters, and movie reviews.
