In this lesson, students closely examine Dickinson's poem "There's a certain slant of light" in order to understand her craft. Students explore different components of Dickinson's poetry and then practice their own critical and poetry writing skills in an emulation exercise. Finally, in the spirit of Dickinson's correspondences, students will exchange their poems and offer informed critiques of each others' work.

 The attached Remote Learning Plan is designed for Grade 7 English Language Arts students. Students will learn the different literary terms found in literature and poetry. They will have opportunity to practice their understanding of these terms by playing a number of online games. Students will then determine which literary device is being used in lines of literature and poetry through the practice at the end of lesson. Students will then show what they know with 10 lines of poem which includes literary devices. If they are still uncertain of all the devices, another video is available to them to watch. The last section gives them the opportunity to look for literary devices being used by the author in Freak the Mighty. When students become aware of these devices, they will write them down, label them, and then explain how the device made the reading better. In this unit, students will read the novel, The Outsiders, while simultaneously working to analyze the text and time period of the novel.

In this lesson students will examine the characters in a chapter who happen to have differing view points. This is an important factor for success with this lesson. Students will analyze characters and actively express theiir perspectives on different topics and questions.  Students will use their background knowledge,previous learning from the book, and make inferences about the characters. During the "discussion" students use their acting skills to be a partticular character and discuss from that point of view. They will justify the stance they take as they speak in character.  This creates a great understanding of perspective and view points before moving into deeper dives about author's perspectives.
