In this unit students will use what they know about how words are structured to read a variety of Expository Texts about the election process. Students will identify author’s point of view, explain why the author wrote the text and support their answer by citing proof in text. Students will then hold an election of their own, choose from a variety of topics they would like to vote on, then create digitally a campaign video communicating their point of view with details to support their point of view in hopes to persuade the audience to vote for their topic.

 Nebraska Standards: 3.2.2.d, 3.2.1h, 3.2.2.aTarget: Students will review and practice parts of speech, specifically adverbs with self, partners or/and class. When students know how to correctly use adverbs they can enhance thier wrting by making it more interesting, adding details, and using good word choice. Time- 20 minutesMaterials- all optional: paper, pencils, video, partner

This lesson is meant to be used as reinforcement after teaching parts of speech:  nouns, verbs and adjectives.  Students will review these parts of speech using movies in Brainpop or BrainpopJr, depending on the needs of students. Brainpop movies are titled Nouns, Verbs and Objects, and Adjecttives.  BrainpopJr movies are titles Nouns, Verbs, and Adverbs/Adjectives.  Depending on your situation, you can view the movies together, or students can view individually.  Have students complete the Easy Quiz for each movie, either alone or with a partner, as a check for understanding. The amount of time spent on review will be determined by student need. Also included are short YouTube videos that can be used to review these parts of speech

The attached Lesson Plan is designed for 3rd grade writing students. Students will go through the writing process to write a descriptive personal narrative piece and they will be able to use descriptive words to describe an event or place that they have experienced.
