This workshop is designed to help you write clearly, accurately and effectively in both an academic and a professional environment. In class, we analyze various forms of writing and address problems common to advanced speakers of English. We will often read one another’s work.

This PowerPoint Show is a presentation designed to help students use fewer be verbs. During the presentation, students are introduced to four typical be-verb patterns, and each slide identifies a method to eliminate the pattern by using a verb packed with meaning. At the end of the presentation, there is a brief exercise designed to practice grammar point.

Il percorso didattico propone una riflessione metalinguistica sulla struttura della frase semplice a partire dal principio della valenza del verbo e del soggetto.Il percorso ha come finalità il riconoscimento dei ruoli fondamentali che gli elementi che compongono una frase semplice rivestono nella struttura della frase stessa.Gli obiettivi specifici possono essere così decritti: riconoscere il ruolo centrale del verbo nella struttura sintattica della frase; comprendere e applicare alla analisi e alla costruzione delle frasi il principio dell'importanza del verbo; possedere il concetto di “frase minima” come frase costituita dal verbo e dai suoi argomenti, cioè gli elementi necessari richiesti dal verbo stesso in base alla sua valenza;   classificare gli elementi fondamentali costitutivi di una “frase semplice” in base al ruolo che svolgono nella frase: argomenti, espansioni del nome, espansioni della frase; produrre frasi in base a vincoli sintattici dati.

As each language has its own alphabet, it also has its own grammar. For English, all the words we see are divided into nine classes or categories. These classes are called Parts of Speech. The dictionaries we use always mention the category of the word and tell us if a word is used in multiple categories of the Parts of Speech.
Knowing the grammar of a language will not enable fluency in your speaking or writing, but it helps. Knowing the functions of the elements of language (i.e. words) helps us in their appropriate and accurate use. This preamble is necessary so as to make us read the definitions and explanations as a new thing; devoid of the stereotyping that happened to us at schools.

In English, the past perfect tense is used to describe the relationship between two actions that happened in the past. Using had + past participle makes the order of the two events clear. For example, one can say, “I had studied English before I moved to Australia”. This sentence is clear and concise. As well, one can see the past perfect contained in the if clause in the third conditional. Ultimately, the past perfect is used in complex sentences, which may be why new English learners are so intimidated by it. This engaging lesson plan focuses on the simple past tense verbs that end with -ed. It is a comprehensive, simple and engaging lesson—just stick to the materials provided. You can introduce it to beginner students or use it as a review with intermediate students. Throughout the lesson students will then have the opportunity to use this newly learned knowledge to describe images. They will also complete gap-fill exercises and read full sentences in English. Finally, they will make their own sentences using the past simple tense.
