Climate Justice League Professional Development Template
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC
Rating
0.0 stars

This resource is a professional development template for facilitating a hybrid professional learning community for educators. Through a combination of in-person gatherings, Zoom sessions, and asynchronous activities, teachers learn about climate justice and environmental justice topics that are relevant in their communities. They learn and collaborate with their peers in the CJL and are supported to design and implement a community action project with their students. This professional learning community was designed and facilitated in partnership with Stacy Meyer and Educational Service District 112.In this template, presenters can reference an outline of the learning experience. In addition, feel free to review "Climate Justice League - Community Action Project Examples" to get a sense of the types of projects that teachers implement, or to check out "Climate Justice Gallery Walk" as a sample learning activity. We encourage you to adapt the structure and content to fit the needs of educators you support, especially by incorporating locally relevant resources and examples!

Filopodia respond to SOCE through a mechanism involving STIM1, Orai, and TRPC1

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Many types of cells can extend and retract filopodia to probe their surroundings and achieve directional movement. While this process seems to involve store-operated calcium entry (SOCE), filopodia lack calcium-binding structural proteins. so it’s unclear exactly how they respond to calcium. To learn more, researchers recently induced SOCE in a rat tracheal epithelial cell line. During the first phase, ER calcium depletion, filopodia prevalence briefly increased and then spontaneously decreased. In addition, the ER calcium sensor STIM1 was shuttled to the cell surface, where it colocalized with the calcium channel Orai, while the cation channel TRPC1 retreated to the cell interior and clustered with phospholipase C, a protein that breaks down a filopodia substrate. During the second SOCE phase, cellular calcium influx, STIM1 returned to the ER, while TRPC1 departed from phospholipase C and dispersed throughout the cell membrane, which was likely triggered by Orai-mediated calcium influx..."

The rest of the transcript, along with a link to the research itself, is available on the resource itself.

This course is set up as a way to provide resources and practice with understanding, using, and creating OER. It contains resources and tasks originally created for the Open Resources Fellowship Professional Learning Community at Mountain Heights Academy--an all online charter school for grades 8-12 in the state of Utah. This course focuses on using the OER Commons for finding and remixing resources, and authoring original OER with an emphasis on providing opportunities for "next-gen" or student-created OER.

Adam Randall and his team at both Henley Middle School and Henley High School launched with great success, the piloting of the YouScience platform https://www.youscience.com/ . This platform is a specialized assessment process that engages students in brain games for nearly an hour total and provides detailed results of the students natural abilities, innate skills and examples of how the student might most successfully utilize their aptitudes and interests in preparation for career selection. During the 2020-2021 school year, Henley was 1 of 7 schools in Southern Oregon to start the 18 month pilot. Join us to hear Adam share 3 important aspects of the YouScience implementation process:   What to do prior to delivering the brain games   How to best deliver the brain games   How to best engage with your students with the results of their brain games
