Creating Native American Myths and Legends is a five-part lesson plan asking students to research a traditional or modern Native American myth or legend story and then turn that story, or create an original story into a Pixton graphic cartoon representation. The lesson provides an overview of the basic elements of myths and legends so that students are aware of the structure and key components of each as it relates to Native American storytelling. While traditional methods of Native American storytelling rely heavily on oral storytelling, modern graphic novel collections of stories such as Trickster: Native American Tales are providing a new way of recording traditional stories and providing an outlet for new creations for modern Native American artists and storytellers. The project follows an adapted inquiry model and uses the graphic cartoon generator software website Pixton.com, as well as GSuite for Education.

In this activity, your students will explore the creation myths and legends of different Indigenous Peoples. They will get the chance to compare and contrast their similarities and differences with other myths and legends from around the world. Applying their newfound information and imagination, they will write and illustrate a myth as a modern day short story for younger children, selecting one of the groups of Indigenous People. The story must be typed and submitted using a word processing program.

This OER La Leyenda del Coquí was created by Marcy Fuentes as part of the 2024 World Language OER Summer work and training. Educators worked with Chrystal Liu, Nick Ziegler and Dorann Avey to create OER Learning Plans and materials. The attached Lesson Plan is designed for 9 - 12 World Language Arts teachers for Novice High to Intermediate Learners of Spanish. Students will analyze and evaluate the elements of literary text, build background knowledge to clarify text and deepen understanding, and use relevant evidence from a variety of sources to assist in analysis and reflection of complex text. This Lesson Plan addresses the following NDE World Language Standard(s): NE WL 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 5.1 It is expected that this Lesson Plan will take students 2-4 days to complete.

Although brief, it includes poetry, drama in verse and short story. The works have been selected for their literary interest and the social importance of their themes. They are all by canonical authors.

There are some fantastic, concise, interesting videos on the site, but they are jumbled by theme and it is time consuming to search through them. This list was created to save teachers time.
