This page contains brief lessons about specific grammatical issues and focuses mostly on Egyptian colloquial Arabic, though it does also include some information about Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). Given their brevity, the lessons are of limited use.
This site contains numerous audio, and video files, grouped by topic, of subjects speaking Jordanian colloquial Arabic. There are also a few images and informational links interspersed throughout the site. Each video is available for download and accompanied by an Arabic transcript and an English translation. Videos are based on every day topics like greetings, farewells, shopping, and transportation.
In the Oregon State Guide to Grammar, our professors define grammar terms, explain grammatical conventions, identify parts of speech and constructions, and help students toward a better awareness of their own linguistic intuition. The video series is designed to be a free, online, creative commons (CC BY) resource for high school and college English teachers and students, offering them tools to engage meaningfully with challenging grammatical issues. This course studies what is language and what does knowledge of a language consist of. It asks how do children learn languages and is language unique to humans; why are there many languages; how do languages change; is any language or dialect superior to another; and how are speech and writing related. Context for these and similar questions is provided by basic examination of internal organization of sentences, words, and sound systems. No prior training in linguistics is assumed.
This online textbook represents materials that were used in the first four semesters (two years) of the Mandarin program at MIT. They eventually formed the basis of a print textbook of the same name, published by Yale University Press. The OCW course materials were extensively revised, and at times reordered, before publication, but the general principles of the original remain: to provide a comprehensive resource for the foundation levels of the Chinese language that separates the learning of oral skills from literary (the former being transcribed in pinyin, and the latter in characters). This resource contains the complete online version of the text and accompanying audio recordings.
Below I have included a link to a Problem Based Learning Lesson for learning and understanding the authenticity and importance of varying dialect in society. Both of the acitivities that are included in the lesson will challenge students to build on their prior understanding of other dialets but will also allow them to express creativity in the process.
