Can a person be both admirable and flawed at the same time? In this lesson, students will look more closely at the character of Okonkwo. Students will figure out what his most admirable qualities are, as well as some of his flaws. They will also decide whether Okonkwo has the potential to be a tragic hero.

In this lesson various quotes that are stated by characters in Hidden FIgures are written on chart paper.  Students will use the chalk talk protocol to write explaing their thoughts, connections, and questions about the quote first and then respond to what their classmates have written.  Students will move in small groups from paper to paper guided by a timer. After they have finished, students will discuss big ideas on the chart paper and then discuss and share out how this quote teaches us about the person based on inferences we have made with this activity.  Do we think this what the author intended us to think?  This protocol can be used for any book or topic in many subject areas. There will also be reflection as an informative assessment.

This is a stand alone lesson plan focused on analyzing the characters in Mildred Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.  It includes Powerpoint slides explaining direct and indirect characterization, static and dynamic characters, and flat and round characters.  The final slide directs students to a link to Sharon Layton's Characterization Assignment that provides a chart for students to use to analyze four characters from the novel.  

Students will construct a paragraph using an organizational strategy (TIQA-TIQA-C) and apply that strategy as they write about and characterize the protagonist in Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game."

"CrAss-like phages are the most abundant family of bacteriophages in the human gut. Despite their abundance, only three types of crAss-like phages have been isolated in pure culture. Now, a new study reports the successful isolation of a new crAss-like phage, ΦcrAss002. Researchers used fecal fermentation with antibiotics to select for gram-negative bacteria including Bacteroides, a favorite target of crAss-like phages. That led to the isolation of ΦcrAss002, which infects Bacteroides xylanisolvens. Experiments showed that, despite being a lytic phage, ΦcrAss002 did not form plaques on bacterial lawns or lyse liquid cultures of sensitive bacteria, even at high titers. ΦcrAss002 and B. xylanisolvens can co-exist at high levels in co-cultures, which is consistent with their co-abundance in the human gut. This co-existence between phage and host is also found in the previously described ΦcrAss001..."
