Barrier Islands and Coastal Geomorphology

Students utilize the historical imagery function in Google Earth to determine the position of a barrier island on two different images collected in 1995 and 2013; they also compare to different topographic maps, one created in 1994 and the other in 2011. They use the measure tool in Google Earth to determine how far the island has migrated. They then calculate the migration rate, how far it would migrate in a give time period, and how long it would take to migrate a given distance. Finally, students navigate to a variety of locations to identify coastal landforms.

Students first navigate to the University of California Museum of Paleontology "The Geologic Timescale in Historical Perspective" website to answer a series of background questions about the geologic timescale. Students then navigate to the National Park Service Geologic Timescale website and use the Geologic Time Views Module to answer questions about major theories in geology and watch a video to answer questions about the age of the earth. Finally, students visit the National Climate Data Center "Exploring Weather & Climate Change Through the Powers of 10" website to answer questions about different scales of climate change.

This is a four-part exercise. First, students use discharge and precipitation data to create and interpret hydrographs. In part 2, students are provide with 25 years of mean annual discharge for a river and they calculate and plot recurrence interval to estimate discharge for given recurrence intervals and estimate the recurrence interval for given discharges. Students then create a cross-sectional profile and conduct a series of calculations. In the final part, students create and interpret a longitudinal profile.
