This review of leadership literature and materials was completed by the Spring 2017 Honors Leadership Development course at Central Lakes College in Brainerd, MN. The text contains a review of materials relevant to those studying the topic of leadership. It contains materials on traits and skills of leaders, ethical characteristics of leaders, leadership and emotional intelligence, effective communication, motivating groups, building cohesive groups, creating and utilizing effective goals, effective decision making, initiating change, empowering others, and historical approaches to leadership.

This course explores the values (aesthetic, moral, cultural, religious, prudential, political) expressed in the choices of food people eat. Analyzes the decisions individuals make about what to eat, how society should manage food production and consumption collectively, and how reflection on food choices might help resolve conflicts between different values.

Part of an appendix to the eMuslim website, this is a document containing simple grammar reference charts. The charts do not contain explanations but rather Arabic examples of each grammatical concept. Concepts covered include subject and predicate, nouns and adjectives, the genitive case, plurals, gender, prepositions, possessive pronouns, verb conjugations, imperatives, active and passive participles, and masdars. The reference is two pages.

Dr. Caitlin Gunn and Dr. Caty Taborda created this trauma-informed, culturally responsive, gender neutral curriculum for people who have been impacted by domestic violence. It is offered here as an openly licensed educational resource.

Unlike most traditional domestic violence educational content, this curriculum was developed through an understanding of feminist, queer, and critical race theories. Lessons and group sessions refocus violent and toxic masculinities as the central cultural forces to be interrogated, understood, and challenged. This serves to provide maximum flexibility while also neutralizing language otherwise condemning and reducing individuals to identities of “abuser” and “victim.”

The curriculum is appropriate for ages 16 and up, with particular benefits for those ages 16 through 21. It is applicable to people and groups of all genders – women, men, non-binary and gender-fluid people, and mixed gender groups. It was designed for in-person facilitation (with printable handouts) but could be adapted for online settings.

"Many metabolic diseases show clear differences in how they manifest between males and females. While gonadal steroid hormones have been suggested as the underlying cause, the gut microbiome could also play a critical role. A new study investigated how the makeup and function of the gut microbiome is related to sex, menopausal status, and circulating gonadal steroids in humans. Important differences in gut microbiota composition and functionality were found between (a) pre-menopausal women and (b) men and post-menopausal women. But obesity overrode those differences. In addition, microbiome profiles were associated with certain gonadal steroids, particularly circulating testosterone and serum progesterone. Interestingly, microbiome signatures could be transferred from human donors to microbiome-depleted male mice, with the microbiome of mice 4 weeks after transplantation predicting donors’ testosterone levels..."

Debates about families, sex, and sexuality frame the outline of this course. Each of these subjects differed greatly for individuals in all parts of the Atlantic World, and immediately became points of contention in the clash of societies during the early modern era. The course traces key themes and questions in a variety of locations, mainly focused in West Africa (Liberia, Ghana, and Nigeria), Europe (England and France), and North America (the U.S. and Mexico) since 1700. In addition to learning about historical subjectivities of people in the past, the course also explores historiography (that is, the history of history) as well as tools and techniques used in researching and interpreting the past.

In this lesson, students will learn about and practice the fundamentals of healthy communication and boundary-setting in order to strengthen healthy relationship skills. Students will identify characteristics of healthy & unhealthy relationships.

In this lesson, students will research how famous families came to be. They’ll work with their peers to uncover details about fertilization, gestation, and birth, as well as other aspects of the famous family’s story. Students will then demonstrate (orally or written) their understanding of the concepts from the past two lessons. They will also reflect on the role celebrities play in shaping our thoughts, feelings and behaviors around reproduction and families.

This first lesson (of three) explains sexual and reproductive anatomy, and human reproduction via penis-in-vagina sexual intercourse (PIV sex). During this lesson, the educator will model the use of respectful, inclusive concepts and language to describe the process of human reproduction and family formation.

This second lesson enables students to apply what they know about human reproduction via PIV sex (Lesson 1 of this series) to other means of reproduction. They will not only learn the steps in how insemination and IVF work to create a pregnancy, but they will also learn that people other than parents can provide the genetic material (eggs, sperm, and embryos) and give birth to a child for someone else (surrogates). Students will be working in small groups to help one another understand the concepts and to practice using the inclusive language that the educator modeled in the first lesson.

Students will learn about respecting the gender identities, gender expressions, and sexual orientations of themselves and others through scenarios. Student groups will interpret and present the scenarios to the class.

This course explores how identities, whether of individuals or groups, are produced, maintained, and transformed. Students will be introduced to various theoretical perspectives that deal with identity formation, including constructions of “the normal.” We will explore the utility of these perspectives for understanding identity components such as gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, language, social class, and bodily difference. By semester’s end students will understand better how an individual can be at once cause and consequence of society, a unique agent of social action as well as a social product.

In this series of lessons students explore the concepts of gender and gender expression through the use of mentor texts. Over the course of five sessions, you will read five texts and complete a process grid highlighting key components of each text. Students then create an illustration of how to demonstrate care for people across the gender spectrum.
