Thanksgiving 1 - Pilgrims and American Indians - Beginning Level
Read the Fine Print
Rating
0.0 stars

The Thanksgiving unit is divided into three separate lessons, Thanksgiving 1—Pilgrims and American Indians, Thanksgiving 2—The Pilgrim Story and My Immigrant Story, and Thanksgiving 3—Traditions. In planning this first lesson, consider whether you wish to cover this material in one or two class sessions. It introduces the Pilgrims’ arrival and first year in North America as well as the life of the American Indians who helped them. On the handouts, you will find Reading Paragraphs and Word Banks with visuals to help illustrate the teaching points and to engage the students in discussion. There is new vocabulary that your students will not need to know for the Civics Test. For example, the readings cover historical background to the Thanksgiving story but these details are not on the test. The story of the Pilgrims’ experience presented here will be explored further in, “Thanksgiving 2—The Pilgrim Story and My Immigrant Story,” when the students have an opportunity to share their own stories. Covers civics test items 58, 59, and 87.

Thinking Critically about Idiomatic Expressions in Spanish - Jason Hank
Unrestricted Use

Rating
0.0 stars

The purpose of this lesson is to model for students critical thinking strategies necessary to effectively translate seemingly simple, but surprisingly complex phrases from Englsih to Spanish.  Students will use online resources such as Google Translate, Linguee, and WordReference Forums to find and evaluate usages of the phrasal verb “is on” with regards to television and movies “being on”.  While “is on” is only one example of a phrasal verb, the hope of this lesson is that students will begin to think more critically about what they are trying to translate from English to Spanish. It is also hoped that they know what tools to use (and how to use them) in order to assure that they are saying what they want to say accurately with regard to not only grammatical conventions of Spanish, but also with regard to how Spanish is actually spoken by native speakers of different countries and regions.

Thinking Out Loud: Student Edition
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

This advanced pronunciation course builds on a student’s basic understanding of the sounds and speech patterns of English with a focus on suprasegmental skills, such as stress, thought groups, intonation, linking, and phonological changes. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to apply the process of developing pronunciation skills and be able to identify and correct pronunciation problems in order to produce clearly understandable English in an academic setting.

One special feature is the inclusion of meaningful scripts and prompts for pronunciation diagnostics and practice that incorporate themes from Tema Okun’s descriptions of characteristics of white supremacy culture. These ideas, therefore, provide meaningful topics in which to explore our cultures and ourselves. They provide motivation for communication practice.
