This course provides an introduction to the language and culture of the Portuguese-speaking world, with special attention to Brazilian Portuguese. This course focuses are on basic oral expression, listening comprehension, and elementary reading and writing. Students develop their vocabulary and understanding of grammatical concepts through active communication. This is a coordinated language lab program and is designed for students with no knowledge of Portuguese. Class is conducted entirely in Portuguese.

Rockin Russian is designed to give students exposure to the Russian language and culture through the medium of Russian music videos. Students are able to perfect their grammar while rocking out to music videos from Russia's pop stars. Based on Russian music videos from MTV Russia, Rockin' Russian is supplemented with exercise materials focusing on pronunciation, vocabulary development, grammar and cultural features. Parts of the videos are embedded into exercises in each category that students can revisit, strengthening their language skills.

This lesson focuses on reducing subject relative clauses as well as shortening relative pronouns. In this activity students will discuss specific work life situations as well as things specific to getting a job or during the interview process. This brings in a real life situation to the lab to enhance discussion as well as learning.

Spanish I is very different from other classes at MIT. The central component of the text and workbook is a series of 26 half-hour video episodes. The videos allow students to learn authentic Spanish and experience its cultural diversity while following a good story full of surprises and human emotions. Students also listen to an audio-only program integrated with the text and workbook.
In the classroom, students do a variety of activities and exercises, which include talking in Spanish about the video program, practicing pronunciation and grammar, and interacting in Spanish with classmates in pairs and small groups. The class is conducted in Spanish as much as possible, but English is used where necessary for clarity and efficiency. This course deals with all basic language skills: aural comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. This class assumes no previous knowledge of Spanish.

Students will review different grammar functions they have learned throughout the semester as well as speak Spanish for the entire lab.

In this activity, students will begin by discussing their preferred type of work environment and typical jobs held by college students. They will then discuss how they might handle a handful of difficult scenarios at work. Students will take turns being the employee and the advice giver.  This OER Spanish Level 4, Activity 07: El Mundo del Trabajo/The World of Work (Online) was remixed by Jill Camargo and as part of the 2024 World Language OER Summer work and training. Educators worked with Chrystal Liu, Nick Ziegler and Dorann Avey to create OER Learning Plans and materials. The attached Lesson Plan is designed for 9 - 12 World Language Arts teachers for Novice Learners of Spanish. Students will analyze and evaluate the elements of literary text, build background knowledge to clarify text and deepen understanding, and use relevant evidence from a variety of sources to assist in analysis and reflection of complex text. This Lesson Plan addresses the following NDE World Language Standard(s): NE.WL.1.3.D, NE.WL.1.2.D, NE.WL.3.1.D, NE.WL.4.1.D It is expected that this Lesson Plan will take students 30-45 minutes to complete.

In a traditional English Language class of 90 minutes with 50 students , the percentage of time spent by students to speak is too less i-e hardly 45 seconds per student. It reflects very less rather NO practicing time left for students to polish their speaking skills and thus they are left fumbling for words and speak incorrect English.

This lesson plan focuses on simple concepts that students can use to practice speaking English. Since advertising is a universal topic, you can use this lesson with students of all levels and interests. In this lesson, students are introduced to vocabulary and concepts related to brands, target markets and advertising channels. Also, they will have the opportunity to talk about the pros and cons of advertising. This engaging lesson plan focuses on the simple past tense verbs that end with -ed. It is a comprehensive, simple and engaging lesson—just stick to the materials provided. You can introduce it to beginner students or use it as a review with intermediate students. Throughout the lesson students will then have the opportunity to use this newly learned knowledge to describe images. They will also complete gap-fill exercises and read full sentences in English. Finally, they will make their own sentences using the past simple tense. In this activity, students will practice listening comprehension and recognizing different tones in Mandarin Chinese. Students will write correct and accurate tones after listening to the instructor speak the short sentences and phrases out loud, then read back their answers to check accuracy and practice speaking with accurate tones.
