This lesson is an adaptation of a history lesson designed by the National Endowment for the Humanities.  The focus of the lesson is on comparing and contrasting primary sources describing the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 in order to teach students methods for evaluating historical sources.  The historical content has been paired with English proficiency standards to help support students comprehension of challenging historical documents.  It is designed for high school, but with some adaptation could be used in an 8th grade classroom.  The lessons are designed to support Intermediate to Advanced (ELP 3-5) language learners, although students with Beginning proficiency (ELP 1-2) would find some success with this as well.  Students compare two newspaper reports on the fire and two memoirs of the fire written many decades later, with an eye on how these accounts complement and compete with one another, and how these sources can be used to draw historical meaning from them.

Pairs of students respond to literature alternately in shared journals. Mini-lessons are presented on responding to prompts, creating dialogue, adding drawings, and asking and answering questions.

Welcome to Explorations 1: Grammar for the Experienced Beginner. This English grammar textbook was designed for a class of Clackamas Community College (CCC) ESOL students who need only a review of the BE verb and are ready to learn the simple present and present progressive tenses.

Students explore the nature and structure of expository texts that focusing on cause and effect and apply what they learned using graphic organizers and writing paragraphs to outline cause-and-effect relationships.

The activity includes a series of exercises, in which students view the literal representations of idioms and then examine the metaphorical meanings of the idioms.

Fact Fragment Frenzy provides elementary students with an online model for finding facts in nonfiction text, then invites students to find facts in five sample passages.

Adult ESL learners may not know the American measurement system. The United States is one of only five countries still using Fahrenheit to measure temperatures (see list below). Simplifying the conversion can help our learners make sense of local temperatures. The method below is “a reasonable approximation”, not an exact calculation.

This lesson presents guided practice for google slides, along with internet research practice, jobs awareness, and speaking practice.

Presentation slides intended for use in an intermediate academic English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom. Each set of slides includes the following:
1. An introduction to the grammar point using inductive reasoning, intended for use in the classroom to complement instructor presentation. Explanations of meaning and form for each grammar point.
2. Example sentences based around a theme. The themes are listed in the title of each slide set.
3. Reference charts and lists for the grammar point.
4. Links to websites and related videos. These websites and videos have been curated for accuracy and are comprehensive.
5. Meaningful practice activities that integrate the grammar instruction with other language skills.
6. Lesson plans for a project based on the grammar presentation slides, suitable for Project Based Learning approach.

Online instruction is an important supplement to traditional classroom instruction. However, internet access is not always available to all students. This lesson presents options for students without a home computer. It also lists 5 helpful ESL/ELL websites.
