This is the first edition of the “Arabic Language Through Dialogue” 1, 2 and 3 series in addition to the Iraqi Dialect through Dialogue book. The series attempts to make learning of the Arabic language more accessible and enjoyable to non-native speakers of Arabic using dialogues and communicative exercises that relate to the dialogue in each lesson. The series was made possible by partial funding and complete encouragement from the Language Acquisition Resource Center (LARC) under the directorship of Dr. Mary Ann Lyman-Hager and hosted at the San Diego State University. Dr. Ghada Osman, the director of the Center of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the San Diego State University, offered us invaluable advice and encouragement. In these books you will see the following:
1.High frequency dialect (A’miyyah) utterances are incorporated in each dialogue to give the learner a flavor of a’miyyah across the Arab world.
2.Arabic music and songs are used to teach the various dialects of the Arab world and to infuse the books with Arab culture.
3.The dialogues deal with everyday life issues from ordering food to renting a house to buying a car to talking about School and politics and social issues. All of this is done in a very easy MSA language that approximates the spoken language of educated Arabs.
4.Idiomatic expressions are incorporated in the dialogues.
5.Famous Arabic proverbs are part of every lesson in Book 3 and they come from a different región in the Arab world. We did not want to focus on one dialect as we wanted to expose learners to the 4 major Arabic dialects through songs, idiomatic expressions and high frequency words and then leave it up to the learner to decide which one he/she is most interested in. Once they decide which dialect they want to pursue, they can then plan their summer or semester abroad based on that knowledge.
6.Many games and fun activities are incorporated in each lesson.
7.Grammar is an important piece of these books but it is not the centerpiece. Learners will be exposed to all the grammatical notions and concepts needed to build their linguistic knowledge but the our focus remains on the USING the language rather than knowing ABOUT the language.

This blog is from an American woman living and working in Saudi Arabia. It includes information about living and working in Saudi Arabia as well as her travels elsewhere in the Middle East. This particular section of the blog includes lessons on Arabic, which are all transliterated. Conversations that are transliterated and translated, vocabulary lists, and cultural information are all included. The lessons include one on bread, one on time and the concept of time, and one on New Year's Resolutions.
This blog offers translations of Arabic songs into English. Arabic transcriptions of the song lyrics are also provided, as are the transliterated lyrics. Where possible, the song has been added to the website as well so that users can listen to the song as well as read along. Users can request new songs to be translated, submit their own translations, and leave comments. Users can also search the site or click on a singer's name to be given a list of their songs that have been translated on the site.
Arabic On-line provides a variety of resources to learn the Arabic language. It offers a summary of the alphabet as well as a platform to practice it by taking quizzes. In addition, it offers a comprehensive list of vocabulary words that cover diverse topics such us vocabulary words relating to military terminology, ecology, the body, emotions, leisure, politics and much more. The words are presented in English, Arabic, and French, among other languages. Other resources include a list of links to Arabic media and dictionaries.
Arabic Online offers a large quantity of information about Arabic grammar divided up into "lessons," grouped by topic. The grammar sections contain many charts to help promote understanding. The site provides a vocabulary section with a large number of word lists grouped by topic.
This guide is for students who wish to get an idea of what speaking proficiency is, what the guidelines are for speaking proficiency, and what kinds of outcomes can be expected after different amounts of Arabic study. It can also be used by instructors who are looking for similar information. Examples of students at different levels are provided, as are rater comments of the examples. The website includes a list of resources for further instruction and information regarding oral proficiency.
The collection of Arabic papyrus, parchment, and paper at the J. Willard Marriott Library is the largest in the U.S. It contains several parchment pieces, 770 Arabic papyrus documents, and over 1,300 Arabic paper documents. The collection was compiled by Professor Atiya and his wife who purchased the collection over several years, largely from dealers in Egypt, Beirut, and London. Most of the collection originated in Egypt and the vast majority of the material is from 700 AD to the start of Ottoman rule. The collection is not yet cataloged.

Today in most Arabic cultures, you may still experience public storytelling and spontaneous poetry challenges in the streets. The art of turning a rhyme into sly verbal sparring is considered a mark of intelligence and a badge of honor. Students will learn about the origins and structure of Arabic Poetry.
The Arabic Proficiency Test measures reading and listening skills. The exam can be administered to high school and college students as well as to professionals. The length of the exam is 2 hours 30 minutes and its format is selected response/multiple choice. Ultimately, the reported result is based on ACTFL scores of novice, intermediate, advanced, and auperior proficiency levels.
This web page contains an extensive list of Arabic proverbs. Each proverb is given an translation in the English language to make it easily understood by the learner; for some of the phrases, there is a further explanation of what is meant by the proverb, i.e. A needle in a haystack = something that is very difficult to find.
This document comes from the Library of Congress. It gives full and very detailed rules for transliterating Arabic words and letters into English using Latin characters. The guide also gives pronunciation instructions and includes slightly more complicated topics such as when the 'ta marboota' is transliterated as a 't' and when it is transliterated as 'ah.'
This textbook, first published in 1919, is designed to provide beginning through advanced instruction in the written form of Modern Standard Arabic. The first fifteen lessons introduce the alphabet and the book then moves on to nouns, verbs, and more complex grammatical concepts. The lessons are interspersed with self-tests, and there are review lessons every so often. The textbook contains a reader with selections from newspapers and magazines for each of the last hundred lessons. An answer key and an index are also included. The filesize of the PDF is 34 MB.

This page offers 186 different children's stories written in Arabic. Topics range from scientific matters such as how to build a telescope to literature and folktales, including Indian folktales. Stories must be viewed using Java and users must click on the link to view the resource and its title. Many contain images and other illustrations. The intended age level of the reader varies from story to story.

For instance, there is a link to an episode of The Simpsons in Arabic while providing sentences and translations of some of the more complicated phrasing.
This is a collection of children's stories that are linked to on the Books To Learn Arabic blog and are available for free download. There are 36 different books available that move up from grade 1 to grade 4, progressing in difficulty as the grade levels move up. A pictoral dictionary accompanies each page and teaches the meanings of some words in this way. When downloaded, the files come with an audio component so that the books can be read to you when the words are clicked on.
