This lesson serves as a starting point for teachers who are interested in implementing Student Engaged Assessment and seek to use rubrics as assessments for, and of, learning. By participating in a conversation about riding a bike and sequencing photos of cyclists according to skill, students create a “continuum of learning” that’s translatable to standard-based assessment and rubrics that they may encounter in the future. In order for formative assessment to be effective, students must feel respected, valued, efficacious, and engaged in their classroom. This lesson provides students the opportunity to participate in the development of the assessment language that they and their instructors will use to evaluate their performance. Students collaboratively create a continuum of skill-level descriptors that provide the framework for a mastery rubric. This lesson promotes an environment in which students participate fully in the assessment process, while developing the interpersonal and intrapersonal skills that they’ll need for success in school and life.

This activity deals with the concept of rhyming. This concept is not immediately understood by most students and needs to be explained first with ample examples. The activity consists of groups of 3 words two of which rhyme and one doesn't. Students read the words or listen to the instructor and select the word that doesn't rhyme. They are then directed to pick a specific letter from the "wrong" word and write it in a separate column. After completing the assignment students unscramble the letters trying to form a meaningful expression related to listening which in this case is "I'm all ears".

The study of English literature has numerous benefits. When studying poetry, students learn about syllables, sounds, and how to choose between words that have similar meanings yet differ in nuance. Taking a glance at prose gives students a look at what some great historical authors had to say and how the way these authors expressed themselves lent significance to their messages.
This short textbook was written for an English for Academic Purposes class for high school students in Japan. It could easily be used in a quarter or trimester. Nothing is dependent on the country. One term is a short time for such a vast field. Yet, if our students develop some appreciation for English literature, it will surely be a benefit to them. Hemingway once wrote, “There are many kinds of stories in this book. I hope that you will find some that you like.”
