This workshop is designed to explore and discuss the importance of cultural competency when providing services to children and families experiencing trauma. Different perspectives will be explored, as well as self reflection of the participants own biases. Different degrees of sociohistorical trauma, environmental trauma and psychological trauma will be discussed. Participants will leave with the knowledge and understanding needed to provide culturally responsible services.

This workshop provides a living model of outcomes-driven culture as a critical part of family-centered practice. The presentation will provide systems and tools to ensure that outcomes truly do matter at every level of the organization.

Solution-orientated Child and Family Team Meetings: This workshop will focus on prioritizing crisis from a solutions perspective. When the family feels there is no hope for their situation; how do you as their team assist the family in changing their perspective on their situation; when you cannot change the situations they are facing? We will focus on the process that the team follows to support the family in times of crisis.

This workshop will focus on Sacramento County’s cross agency collaboration and outcome sharing to provide High Fidelity Wraparound planning for youth and their families. The presentation will outline the roles and relationships within the county as they relate to practice, training and system integration. Specific highlights will detail the implementation of performance measures and new initiatives. In addition, the workshop will include lessons learned and a youth/parent testimonial.

This workshop will help participants understand the dynamics of conflict and learn strategies to respond effectively and confidently. We will look at how culture can help in planning; using preferred methods for meeting needs. Family Voice and Choice can be realized when we successfully interact and think in ways that show respect for diversity in communication; outlook and preference; to name a few. Join us as we unpack an understanding of culture and how being Culturally Responsive; Reflective and Respectful can be a great planning tool for meeting needs through the phases “Hello; Help; Heal and Hope.” Through a process of self-reflection; the principle of culture and its impact on the Wraparound process will be reinforced.

This training will provide an overview, insight and experiential opportunities to explore effective methods for providing Wraparound services to families with youth under 10 years of age. In a round robin format, the audience will spend time cycling through the four phases of Wraparound: engagement, planning, implementation and transition. Handouts and step by step techniques will be offered to help individuals practice specific activities in each phase that are intended to engage the youth and family. This training will benefit all mental health providers and allow them to deepen their practice working with youth, meeting them at their developmental level and using fun, hands on strategies to create mental health progress.

This workshop provides an overview of California’s joint management system or shared management system implemented as a result of the Katie A. Settlement Agreement. The Department of Health Care Services and California Department of Social Services will provide an overview of their framework for collaboration as they work to provide quality mental health services to children in the child welfare system.

California’s Foster Care and related reforms mandate that public agencies build or enhance shared leadership and decision-making processes. While many counties have begun to collaborate in this effort; there is a continuum of integration which; if pursued; will sustain and support long-term shared outcomes; return financial investments; and empower youth and family service recipients in unique and value-added ways. This workshop will give attendees an opportunity to both understand the elements of successful inter-agency management and begin to strategize their own partnerships.

This workshop will present various options to implementing Wraparound practice and principles for schools; with education as the system initiating the need for Wraparound for children and families. The workshop will cover two educational service delivery models and funding streams: Educationally Related Mental Health Services (ERMH S) and School-based Wraparound. The ERMH S Wraparound Program provides an alternative to out-of-home placement for children who have not been able to access their education with less-intensive interventions. The workshop will cover School-based Wraparound Programs focused on addressing familial needs that impede children’s ability to access their education.

The focus of this workshop is to provide general information on Human Trafficking and Commercially Sexually Exploited Youth; to explain how Yolo County is responding to the issue; and to provide tools to identify and understand how working with victims of trafficking requires a different approach.

Sex is a fundamental part of human existence. So why are we so terrible at talking about it? If you’d like to have an impact on teen pregnancy; STDs; sexual exploitation; sexual harassment; sexual abuse; healthy relationships and many other areas; then you need to be able to talk about sex. This workshop will examine why we struggle so much to talk about sex and provide tips on facilitating healthy conversations.

In this active workshop, you will participate in and learn how to facilitate several teambuilding exercises that could be used with many types of groups, large or small, with clients and families or with your own staff. We will learn activities for use early in a group’s development to break the ice and develop trust. We will also learn activities for later stages of group development that challenge groups to confront problems and expand thinking. We will finish with an activity useful for concluding services with a group and bring meaning to the process being concluded. Spots will be limited, so please arrive early!

Joe Hanson compares DNA to detailed manual for building a person out of cells -- with 46 chapters (chromosomes) and hundreds of thousands of pages covering every part of you.

Explore the relationship between the genetic code on the DNA strand and the resulting protein and rudimentary shape it forms. Through models of transcription and translation, you will discover this relationship and the resilience to mutations built into our genetic code. Start by exploring DNA's double helix with an interactive 3D model. Highlight base pairs, look at one or both strands, and turn hydrogen bonds on or off. Next, watch an animation of transcription, which creates RNA from DNA, and translation, which 'reads' the RNA codons to create a protein.
