This lesson can be used to provide an example of the compare and contrast text structure.  It also give students the chance to compare and contrast using a venn diagram after reading an expository text. 

The importance of reading aloud to children is an established tenet of reading instruction. This lesson supports the language development and reading comprehension of kindergarten through second graders. Through the use of the text talk strategy, students explain, develop, and expand story ideas. This lesson is designed to help students learn how to gain meaning from words that are taken out of their original context.

This Remote Learning Plan was created by Joanna Pruitt as part of the 2020 ESU-NDE Remote Learning Plan Project. Educators worked with coaches to create Remote Learning Plans as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.*I have remixed this lesson to use for a 9-12 grade research paper class. The only changes I made were to break it up into smaller sections (Topic Selection and Brainstorming) in order to fit it into our course schedule.

Comprehensive literacy instruction for all students requires the use of tools and strategies that make the instruction accessible. The Unlocking Literacy for Students with Disabilities Modules will build on what you already know about literacy instruction by demonstrating how strategic tools or strategies can make literacy instruction accessible to students with complex communication needs and physical disabilities. Best practices and research-based strategies for literacy instruction, as well as K-2 English Language Arts (ELA) Common Core State Standards (CCSS), will be included throughout all modules. Universal Strategies & Technology ToolsModule 1 will equip educators and parents with foundational tools and universal strategies to improve literacy instruction for students with complex communication needs and physical disabilities.  The foundational tools and strategies will be applied within subsequent Unlocking Literacy modules.

Interacting with law enforcement can be a very negative experience. This lesson provides vocabulary and body language exercises that may help students have more positive interactions with police. The ‘ponder’ activities are designed to give students tools to change how they are perceived.

Using a literature review and primary sources that were part of the review, students examine data to evaluate if this data can predict future life choices. Students will learn content in Math, Biology and Language Arts during this literacy-based lesson that supports students in using textual evidence to develop and support claims.

Students often struggle to find theme in literature--one that is not a bumper sticker, a "moral to the story," or anything that could be applied to more than one story.  Understanding what theme is, an implicit argument the author is making, is the first step.  Then it gets more complicated as they realize that there are wrong answers (the ones that don't make sense with the story), there are undeveloped answers (ones that don't get far enough past motif but are on the right track), and there are many possible correct answers that can be explained and supported with the text. This activity uses the Generate-Sort-Connect-Elaborate strategy in small groups to help students focus on the details of the story and how they contribute to the overall point of the story.  It can be used with any piece of literature you deem appropriate for your students.

Folk tales and fairy tales are of interest to and part of the language arts curriculum for young learners. This lesson supports the study of this genre and the study of irregular patterns and letter-sound relationships related to decoding and spelling. After reading the folk tale Jack and the Beanstalk, students discuss the word giant and its beginning sound. Students then create their own lists of words that begin with the same sound. Then, students are introduced to words with the soft g sound and create a new list of words with this beginning sound. As a culminating activity, students work individually or in groups to categorize animal names into groups according to their beginning g sound.

Students will learn the research process and how to write a research paper. It is expected that this Remote Learning Plan will take students 4-5 weeks to complete.

 The attached Remote Lesson Plan is designed for Grade 7 English Language Arts students. Students will get an introduction to genre and the different characteristics of genre. They will gain information through a slide show and a video. Digital flashcards are provided to help with learning the terms and their definitions. A Check for Understanding is provided to assess how each student is understanding the characteristics of a variety of literary and informational. This Remote Lesson Plan addresses the following NDE Standard: NE LA 7.1.6.gIt is expected that this Remote Learning Plan will take students 90 minutes to complete.
