This course outline is designed for a Level 7 advanced communication course at Portland Community College. It addresses listening, speaking, pronunciation, and presentation skills within the theme of entrepreneurship by drawing inspiration from the TV show “Shark Tank” and its various incarnations in other languages/countries around the world.

The curriculum is designed for a term of 8 weeks. Each class period is 3 hours long, and the class meets twice weekly for a total of 16 class periods plus final exam. During the course, students complete several projects:

*a survey of people outside of class
*a report to the class about the survey results
*a video commercial for a new product
*a live pitch for a new product to a panel of guest “sharks”

The course outline links to all supporting materials in the form of Google Docs, Google Forms, Google Slides, Quizlets, YouTube videos, etc.

Silent Letters

This light activity deals with "silent letters" of English language which are encountered in a large number of English language words. Students read a fairly simple dialogue with the blanks for words containing silent letters. Silent letters, however, are listed while the rest of the letters are blanked. Students find the missing words and become aware of silent letters. Great activity for a warm-up.

Speaking for Myself: ESOL Listening, Speaking, and Learning in Community

This material has been used for several years with Intermediate to high Intermediate level students in the Chemeketa Community College ESOL program. It has been sourced and designed in response to feedback from and the changing needs of this community. The students take Listening and Speaking classes twice a week. Each class is an hour and a half twice a week, for a total of six hours’ contact time.

A large part of the course is based on a project based learning approach; at this level, using critical thinking skills, collaboration, and presentation skills enables students to develop and practice skills while seeing tangible results boosts confidence and provides a sense of community. Active learning is also a key component. Students have a voice in the themes, topics, and activities assigned and since all have a wealth of experience in many areas, the presentations and projects are engaging and relevant. Much of the success of projects is based on an expectation that students will work on them outside of class time, and homework
assignments are a regular part of the course.

I’ve designed this course as a set of modules which can be used separately or in conjunction with one another; please feel free to select what works for your class and leave the rest. This course is an Open Education Resource and is under an Open License, which means the material is free, can be copied, shared with others, and adapted. I ask that any instructor who used the material attributes it, but users are free to adapt or build on it to create new material for educational purposes. Thinking Out Loud: Student Edition

This advanced pronunciation course builds on a student’s basic understanding of the sounds and speech patterns of English with a focus on suprasegmental skills, such as stress, thought groups, intonation, linking, and phonological changes. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to apply the process of developing pronunciation skills and be able to identify and correct pronunciation problems in order to produce clearly understandable English in an academic setting.

One special feature is the inclusion of meaningful scripts and prompts for pronunciation diagnostics and practice that incorporate themes from Tema Okun’s descriptions of characteristics of white supremacy culture. These ideas, therefore, provide meaningful topics in which to explore our cultures and ourselves. They provide motivation for communication practice.

This work is organized around vocabulary for 5 themes: Psychology, Wellness, Technology, Careers, and Oregon. Each theme has 2 units for a total of 10 units. Each unit contains 24 - 28 target vocabulary words. Other words that may be unfamiliar to students are glossed.

We use this material as our textbook for an intermediate vocabulary class for adult English language learners at our community college. This class meets for 2 hours per week, and we typically use 5 units per 10-week term.

Each unit contains multiple readings. If you are not teaching a vocabulary class, the readings and vocabulary work may be useful supplements in other classes.

Welcome to Maple Falls—Introduction to Reading, Writing, and Grammar for Adult ESOL Learners

This student textbook, teacher guide, and supplementary materials help support the development of Adult ESOL learners.

Welcome to Welcome to Maple Falls — Introduction to Reading, Writing, and Grammar for Adult ESOL Learners. Our goal in creating this book was to provide a more structured and grammatical beginning reading and writing book that was flexible enough to help students with no or limited literacy but also aid students with advanced literacy who just haven’t had much exposure to English, so they are at a beginning level.

We designed this book to follow experience-based learning principles, which rely heavily on using adults’ prior learning to increase the accessibility of learning and incorporate new learning. This means creating contexts, readings, activities, and learning opportunities that are immediately relevant to student situations. We see language as a tool to be used by students to achieve social, community, educational, and work-related goals. However, this is not survival English, but a learning informed by research that situates the learner at the center of learning and interacting with materials and classmates to improve their own lives and those of classmates. This type of learning creates self- directed learners and helps learners be ready for problem-solving and critical thinking in authentic situations.
