In Unit 2, students learn how the techniques for water budgeting (covered in Unit 1) can be used to monitor both groundwater (High Plains Aquifer) and surface water (western mountain watershed) systems. Students interpret time-series plots that show the impact of drought years and wet years on underground water storage in the High Plains Aquifer and on snowpack and surface runoff in the western mountain watershed. They also consider the societal implications of water deficits through a series of pre-class readings, questions embedded in the assignments, and small and whole-group discussions. This unit can involve substantial computer time during which students use Excel to view and interpret hydrologic data. An alternative version with hard-copy graphs is also provided.

However, due to the relative complexity of the data investigations, there will still be quite a bit of instructor support needed and/or extended small group that should be arranged.

How have average global air temperature and sea level changed in the last three decades? Have the changes been consistent? Can future changes in air temperature and sea level be predicted? In this unit, students will become familiar with the concept of a time series by calculating recent air temperature and sea level trends and projecting these measurements for 2100. They will also begin to consider environmental factors in addition to temperature that could influence sea level and the potential implications of sea level changes during the next century.

Student discussions are designed to be intermixed into the flow of the lecture and exercise. Thus moving to online discussions would be might take a bit more planning.

In this unit, students investigate water resources of their own area or another area of personal interest, which typically gets them very excited. They apply their knowledge from Units 1 and 2 to identify the water reservoirs which are most important to their local community, the transport pathways responsible for delivering water to those reservoirs, and the relevant and available techniques for monitoring those resources. They also consider interests by different stakeholder groups in relation to water resources and how these potentially competing interests could influence water policy, infrastructure, and distribution in a community.
Show more about Online Teaching suggestions Hide Online-adaptable: The Unit 3.1 exercise is really designed as an in-person stakeholder analysis that might be more challenging to translate to online. However the larger part of the unit, Unit 3.2 Local Watershed investigation, is designed as a student project that can be done individually and would translate well to online.

E·ChinesePlus, an initiative by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), is a comprehensive Moodle-based open access platform aimed at enhancing Chinese as a Second Language (L2) acquisition. The platform offers an extensive array of digital activities designed for various levels (A1, A2, B1, B2 of the CEFR) and linguistic skills, including not only listening, reading, speaking, character recognition and writing, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, but also skills such as culture and translation, for which digital resources can be quite limited. Its user-friendly interface enables learners to customize their educational journey, selecting activities that match their proficiency and learning goals.
A cornerstone of e·ChinesePlus is the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the creation of specific types of activities. Moreover, activities allowing for detailed feedback offer in-depth insights into learners' performance, fostering understanding and self-improvement.

Nowadays, the use of technologies is deeply embedded in the teaching and learning of foreign languages. Therefore, students and teachers are compelled to continuously update their digital skills. Moreover, the need for online teaching has been spurred by the COVID pandemics, which has posed new challenges in this regard. When searching for online tools, one of the main difficulties is the vast amount and disparity of resources available to both teachers and students, who often feel overwhelmed due to the lack of time or assessment criteria. In such cases, the potential of existing resources remains largely unexplored. In this context, we developed an online open access database of digital resources for Teaching and Learning Chinese as a Foreign Language. It includes a collection of metadata to satisfy users with different profiles and needs. In sum, we set up a multilingual (Catalan, Spanish, English and Chinese) and dynamic website, which can be useful for both teachers and learners who, in turn, will be able to enrich it through different types of feedback. Check our website and subscribe to our newsletter to be informed of the latest resources added to the database.
