Elementary Science and Integrated Subjects is a statewide Clime Time collaboration among ESD 123, ESD 105, and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. Development of the resources is in response to a need for research- based science lessons for elementary teachers that are integrated with English language arts, mathematics and other subjects such as social studies. The template for Elementary integration can serve as an organized, coherent and research-based roadmap for teachers in the development of their own NGSS aligned science lessons.  Lessons can also be useful for classrooms that have no adopted curriculum as well as to serve as enhancements for  current science curriculum. The EFSIS project brings together grade level teams of teachers to develop lessons or suites of lessons that are 1) focused on grade level Performance Expectations, and 2) leverage ELA and Mathematics Washington State Learning Standards.

These introductory plans will springboard students into the fictional text, Night of the Twister.  This modified text, and informational PowerPoint featuring four natural disasters, was inspired by a real event that happened in Nebraska in 1980.  The modified text was created using more simplistic language while keeping the main idea intact.  Students will recount events and analyze characteristics that define natural disasters, while answering the overarching unit question: How do natural disasters impact us? This set of lessons is intended to span between 5-10 instructional periods and will also set the stage for specific learning structures and routines.  Students will use response strategies to identify how nature can impact us.  Through reading and discussion, students will cite key details and make inferences based evidence that support the main idea of portions of the text read.  Included are examples of text dependent questions and sample questions to guide instruction.  Contained in this plan are day-by-day lessons.

The Great Sunflower Project is a great way to use Citizen Scientist's observations of bees nationwide to create an online map of the bee population with special attention given to sunflower pollinators. Your students can join the thousands of volunteers to gather pollinator information as part of this data collection. With the bee population in decline, students can actively assist in getting to the bottom of the causes of this environmental issue. There is an introductory video provided in English and Spanish by PBS, a Quick Start Guide, maps, opportunities to observe individual data, and loads of other resources to get your students outdoors and counting pollinators!

This is a two day presentation given to elementary teachers in the Growing Elementary Science Project in October 2019. The presentation contains a science immersion experience for the teachers learning about how a seed gets the materials it needs to become a plant and make more seeds. The learning highlights the use of phenomena within the context of a learning arc over the course of the two days to develop elementary teacher content knowledge related to living systems. Teachers were also supported in planning a science unit using the schoolyard garden context as an anchor for investigations.
