Challenging math problems worth solving.

The name “Open Middle” might sound like a strange name for a website about math problems. However, it references a very specific type of problem we try to encourage here. Most of the problems on this site have:
* a “closed beginning” meaning that they all start with the same initial problem.
* a “closed end” meaning that they all end with the same answer.
* an “open middle” meaning that there are multiple ways to approach and ultimately solve the problem.

Open middle problems generally require a higher Depth of Knowledge than most problems that assess procedural and conceptual understanding. They support the Common Core State Standards and provide students with opportunities for discussing their thinking.

Welcome to the UnboundEd Mathematics Guide series! These guides are designed to explain what new, high standards for mathematics say about what students should learn in each grade, and what they mean for curriculum and instruction. This guide, the first for Grade 2, includes three parts. We strongly suggest tackling these problems yourself to help best understand the methods and strategies weÂ’re covering, and the potential challenges your students might face.Â

Keri McAllister uses technology, workstations, and a lot of choice to turn her students loose on a unit on poetry. In workstations students watch "poetry in motion" videos, create a podcast about their chosen poet, and post reflections on a chosen poem on their class blog.

Sixth grade math teacher Ana Posada shares a lesson on probability. Students do simulations of dependent and independent events using a goody bag of objects where they can document the differences between them.

This is the Project MathTalk homepage that has videos on the following topics: Parabolas, Proportions, Algebraic Expressions, Exponentials, Logarithms, Binomials, Trigonometry, and more.  Over 400 FREE, short, online videos that feature students working on mathematics problems and resolving their struggles through conversation. The instructional approach to the videos draws on evidence-based practices from the latest research in mathematics education. Engaging with the videos enables learners to explore conceptually rich mathematics problems by watching other students talk about math problems via an accessible online platform. The site also contains useful materials for teachers, researchers, and teacher educators. 

Andrea Kowalchik has her students move around the room in pairs while solving proportion problems that are tacked to the walls. This lesson is easy to prepare, fun for students, and gets them working quickly while being active all at the same time.

The Standards’ focus on arithmetic can allow greater variety in the tasks students see, giving students time to synthesize their developing knowledge and practice their calculation skills to fluency. One important place to have variety is in the addition and subtraction situations that students see in word problems. The case of addition and subtraction word problems reflects the general truth that there’s more to arithmetic than initially meets the eye.

Percussionist Steven Angel has developed an innovative program that uses rhythm to help struggling students improve their reading fluency and comprehension. Deceptively simple -- a facilitator taps out a basic rhythm while students read aloud -- the method relaxes students, helps them focus, and is effective in after-school intervention programs as well as traditional classrooms.

By reading a short book aloud, Rick Kleine models for his students how their initial theories of character traits can change over time. Using peer discussion and class participation, the kids are engaged throughout, giving them what Rick hopes will be a life-long love of reading.
