Language study can be divided into four parts: reading, speaking, listening, and writing. Where reasonable, we try to make use of and develop all four of these skills. Through practice, students can become well rounded and increasingly proficient at expressing themselves in English and more generally in their lives. In this book, we focus on critical thinking and clean writing. The last four chapters are a short introduction to philosophy, and they can be a significant leap in difficulty compared with prior chapters.
This book is designed as an English for Academic Purposes class for ESL high school students living in Japan, with a focus on critical thinking and writing. However, there's nothing specific about Japan in the book, and it could be used in other countries just as easily.

A good way to learn to do science in English is to do science in English. When students are doing things, they are engaged, and that is when learning occurs. This book has three parts: biology, physics, and earth science. I have tried to select topics that don't require any specific background knowledge. The pieces are independent. Take whatever looks best for you and forget about the rest.
This book was written for a tenth grade English for Academic Purposes class in Japan. However, there is nothing country-specific in the book. It could reasonably be used in a quarter or trimester.

This seminar will challenge you to think about ways in which the media taps into your mind for social and political reasons. In the social realm, the media appears to be your friend, linking you to friends (and even strangers) with like-minded interests. In politics, the media pushes and pulls you in different directions, trying to bend your beliefs or reinforce them by any means necessary. It’s important to know the strategies involved, as well as the dangers that come along with the media’s influence on our personal and political lives. In this seminar, you will learn about ways in which the media tries to persuade you with specific strategies (especially in political ads or commercial advertising). Later in the seminar, you’ll get a chance to use those strategies to “sell” a particular idea or product. Also, this seminar will show you some of the dangers in the media, enlightening you about your online identity and social capital.StandardsCC.1.2.9-10.DDetermine an author’s particular point of view and analyze how rhetoric advances the point of view.CC.1.2.9-10.HDelineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing the validity of reasoning and relevance of evidence.CC.1.2.9-10.FAnalyze how words and phrases shape meaning and tone in texts.

In Sounding Out activities, students take a regular word, such as sat, produce the letter-sound pattern "sssaaat," and blend to produce the word sat. This is a crucial development in learning to read, bringing together skills that students have spent many weeks working on and providing the first excitement of reading unaided. Being able to sound out regular words also provides students with a self-teaching capability: they can decode unaided words they do not yet recognize on sight.
