The Icebergs Project is a National Science Foundation sponsored partnership between University of Oregon’s research team lead by Dr. David Sutherland and 7th grade teachers for Eugene School District 4J’s Arts and Technology Academy Middle School, along with support from University of Oregon’s STEM CORE, a STEM education center. Over the course of several years teachers and scientists co-planned, revised, and carried out a research-connected cross-disciplinary project-based unit culminating in an “Icebergs Field Day” involving all members of the PI’s research team. Ultimately two separate week-long units were designed, with only one implemented each year.

Identifying Minerals with Chemical and Crystallographic Data

In this exercise, crystal structure data for a variety of unknown minerals are downloaded and entered into a visualization program (either XtalDraw or CrystalMaker). Through a series of directed questions for each unknown, students investigate and manipulate the crystal structure to gather information about its possible identity. This exercise builds on a wide variety of content normally covered over an entire introductory mineralogy course, and could be used as a self-study exercise to help mineralogy students prepare for a comprehensive final exam.

In this exercise, students use whole-rock major- and trace-element compositions of igneous rocks from a variety of tectonic settings and locations to explore the importance of plate setting in determining magma compositions. Students are split into groups and assigned different tectonic settings to examine and compare with other groups. Datasets are obtained from the GEOROC database, imported into Excel spreadsheets, and graphed to learn how igneous rock compositions are a function of plate tectonic setting.

In this exercise, students are split into groups to gather whole-rock geochemical data (major-, trace-, and rare-earth elements) from the GEOROC database for igneous rocks sampled from four different plate tectonic settings: mid-ocean ridges, subduction zones, oceanic islands, and oceanic plateaus. Each group is assigned a different plate tectonic setting and collects three datasets from different locations for their tectonic setting. Geochemical data is graphed as major-element variation and REE diagrams to quantify igneous diversity both within the same tectonic setting and between different tectonic settings. The main goal of this exercise is to demonstrate that igneous rock compositions are a strong function of plate tectonic setting.

Incorporating Corpora – Using corpora to teach German to English-speaking learners

The concept of Data-Driven Learning, the use of corpora in instructed second language acquisition, can be traced to the late 1980s. Despite fifty years of use and a substantial body of literature showing their efficacy in the classroom, language corpora are far from a common pedagogical tool. In fact, teachers attempting to move from theory to praxis will find very few pedagogical manuals or user-friendly corpus tutorials, especially for languages other than English. Incorporating Corpora provides an online manual on the use of corpora to teach German to English-speaking learners. It includes a brief overview of research in Data-Driven Learning, a guide for using Das Digitale Wörterbuch der Deutschen Sprache, and a selection of corpus-based assignments piloted in KU German courses. The manual is be the basis for a series of K-16 teacher workshops during which teachers will explore the use of language corpora in language teaching and will be invited to submit their own activities for inclusion in the project.

In this activity, learners explore the size and scale of the universe by shrinking cosmic scale in 4 steps, zooming out from the realm of the Earth and Moon to the realm of the galaxies. This informational brochure was designed as a follow-up take-home activity for teen and adult audiences. It can follow informal education activities where participants have experienced related space science programming. This activity allows participants to explore ideas of size and scale in the universe at their own pace.

This is a project-based learning lesson about Indiana Mammals and Their Environments. The lesson is about common Indiana animals that the kids see everyday and how humans impact their environments. The goal of the lesson is for the kids to create an environment that meets the needs of all of the animals and the humans without causing any problems, and then present those environments to the class in the form of a claymation project.

Influenza Research Database: an integrated bioinformatics resource for influenza research and surveillance
Unrestricted Use
Public Domain
Rating
0.0 stars

Background The recent emergence of the 2009 pandemic influenza A/H1N1 virus has highlighted the value of free and open access to influenza virus genome sequence data integrated with information about other important virus characteristics.

Design The Influenza Research Database (IRD, http://www.fludb.org) is a free, open, publicly-accessible resource funded by the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases through the Bioinformatics Resource Centers program. IRD provides a comprehensive, integrated database and analysis resource for influenza sequence, surveillance, and research data, including user-friendly interfaces for data retrieval, visualization and comparative genomics analysis, together with personal log in-protected ‘workbench’ spaces for saving data sets and analysis results. IRD integrates genomic, proteomic, immune epitope, and surveillance data from a variety of sources, including public databases, computational algorithms, external research groups, and the scientific literature.

Results To demonstrate the utility of the data and analysis tools available in IRD, two scientific use cases are presented. A comparison of hemagglutinin sequence conservation and epitope coverage information revealed highly conserved protein regions that can be recognized by the human adaptive immune system as possible targets for inducing cross-protective immunity. Phylogenetic and geospatial analysis of sequences from wild bird surveillance samples revealed a possible evolutionary connection between influenza virus from Delaware Bay shorebirds and Alberta ducks.

Conclusions The IRD provides a wealth of integrated data and information about influenza virus to support research of the genetic determinants dictating virus pathogenicity, host range restriction and transmission, and to facilitate development of vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics.

The comprehensive e-book was developed from the European project entitled "European Lived Culture Connects" (Project Acronym: EliCCon project), which was co-financed by the EU funding programme Erasmus Plus. The project was carried out from 2018 to 2020. Project teams from Germany, Spain, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom and Switzerland documented interesting examples of intangible cultural heritage from their country and especially their region. The focus was on photographic documentation. On more than 600 pages impressive examples of customs, traditional knowledge, old crafts, rites, festivals and much more can be found.

This is an activity about structures in space. Learners will construct two different types of trusses to develop an understanding of engineering design for truss structures and the role of shapes in the strength of structures. For optimum completion - this activity should span 3 class periods to allow the glue on the structures to dry. This is engineering activity 1 of 2 found in the ISS L.A.B.S. Educator Resource Guide.
