Developed by a team of scientists from two national laboratories, education researchers, gamers, and a professional game developer, Thirst for Power is a challenging, fast-paced, fun-to-play resource management card game in which players acting as governors of different regions of the country compete to be the first to meet their citizens' energy needs. Through game play, players come to understand how three manifestations of the extreme amplification of the human populationâexploding worldwide demand for energy, increasing exploitation of water resources, and alteration of the planet's climateâare tightly intertwined at the nexus of energy, water, and climate; one cannot be considered in isolation from the other two. "A recent study examined toothbrushes to understand how microbes from our bodies interact with our environment. Toothbrushes are a unique component of the built environment that comes into daily contact with our bodies and water. Researchers characterized the metagenomes of toothbrushes from 34 individuals and found that toothbrush microbiomes resemble microbial communities in the mouth. Toothbrush-associated microbes were less diverse than those in people's mouths, but they had broader antimicrobial resistance gene (ARG) profiles, and microbial community makeup correlated with factors linked to personal health, dental hygiene, and bathroom features. Although this small pilot study must be expanded to confirm the findings, these results suggest that microbes on the surfaces we touch are affected by our health and behavior and that understanding how we can influence these microbes will help us make better decisions about cleaning and maintenance to promote a healthy environment..."

"The microbes found in topsoil are a vital part of the Earth’s ecology. While several recent studies have explored these microbiomes on a global scale, their data on sub-Saharan Africa was sparse, despite the looming threat of climate change to the region. To close this gap, researchers recently examined the microbial ecology of 810 sites across 9 sub-Saharan African countries. The topsoil microbiomes were shaped by a broad range of environmental factors, particularly pH, precipitation, and temperature, and each nation had a quantifiably distinct topsoil microbiome. Computer models based on the data also predicted how country-specific microbiomes might respond to climate change. In Kenya, for example, higher temperatures and lower rainfall could diminish microbial diversity, whereas in Benin, the predicted increase in precipitation is likely to boost fungal biodiversity..."

Tracing Fluorescent Plastics in an Aquatic Environment

Student teams investigate the migration of small-particle plastic pollution by exposing invertebrates found in water samples from a local lake or river to fluorescent bead fragments in a controlled environment of their own designs. Students begin by reviewing the composition of food webs and considering the ethics of studies on live organisms. In their model microcosms, they set up a food web so as to trace the microbead migration from one invertebrate species to another. Students use blacklights and microscopes to observe and quantify their experimental results. They develop diagrams that explain their investigations—modeling the ecological impacts of microplastics.

The Ocean Wise Howe Sound Education Kit Is available in multiple grade editions, all in French and English and include both a student work book and teacher accompanying guidebook. Each kit features several lessons on the unique UNESCO heritage site of the Howe Sound environment.

Átl’ḵa7tsem/Txwnéwu7ts/ Howe Sound is a coastal fjord ecosystem in the Salish Sea. It is a vital area to First Nation communities, providing natural resources that allowed Indigenous peoples to thrive for generations before colonization. Following colonization and years of destructive human activity, such as industrial and coastal development, efforts are currently underway by government, industry groups, and local communities to transition the Sound’s marine ecosystem from crisis to recovery. Indigenous communities, in particular, are working hard to restore life and traditional practices for generations to come.

Using Átl’ḵa7tsem/ Txwnéwu7ts/ Howe Sound as a case study, students can recognize how ecosystems, species, human impact, and climate change are interconnected. This work is essential for students to make informed decisions as the future stewards of our planet.

Students are introduced to some essential meteorology concepts so they more fully understand the impact of meteorological activity on air pollution control and prevention. First, they develop an understanding of the magnitude and importance of air pressure. Next, they build a simple aneroid barometer to understand how air pressure information is related to weather prediction. Then, students explore the concept of relative humidity and its connection to weather prediction. Finally, students learn about air convection currents and temperature inversions. In an associated literacy activity, students learn how scientific terms are formed using Latin and Greek roots, prefixes and suffixes, and are introduced to the role played by metaphor in language development. Note: Some of these activities can be conducted simultaneously with the air quality activity (What Color Is Your Air Today?) of Air Pollution unit, Lesson 1.

What are “orphaned” oil and gas wells and why should we care about them?

Of the millions of wells drilled, approximately 3.5 million are now abandoned, with some being properly plugged and others left unplugged. Unplugged wells can emit greenhouse gases, contaminate surrounding environments, and pose safety hazards. Orphaned wells, which lack a responsible operator, become the financial responsibility of the government and taxpayers.
