This subject explores the legal history of the United States as a gendered system. It examines how women have shaped the meanings of American citizenship through pursuit of political rights such as suffrage, jury duty, and military service, how those political struggles have varied for across race, religion, and class, as well as how the legal system has shaped gender relations for both women and men through regulation of such issues as marriage, divorce, work, reproduction, and the family. NewParaThis workbook is designed for first or second-year sociology of gender or gender studies courses, focusing on the Canadian context. It is divided into five topics - Theory and Concepts, Institutions, Work, Family and Intimate Relationships, and Bodies and Health. This workbook does not replace a textbook, instructor teachings through lectures, class discussion, class assignments, or other standard undergraduate course materials. Instead, this is an activity book: a course companion, working alongside and with those course materials. It is designed to build competency, capacity, and confidence with course materials, concepts, and arguments. It does this by embracing the concepts of embodied learning, iterative scaffolding, and reflexive insight. "Embodied" means doing things with your body and not just your mind; "scaffolding" means breaking things down into constituent parts that can be gathered together to build something bigger; and "reflexive" means thinking about oneself in relation to broad concepts and contexts around us. The workbook presents four types of content. (1) Each chapter has one or two pages of written content deemed "Insights to Think About," which are summative guides to help students grab onto big ideas. (2) The chapters also have "Words to Try," encouraging a usable lexicon. (3) Chapters have thoughtfully designed "Activities." The activities help students to get ideas down, give those ideas meaning and order, and prepare students to do more engaged work in course conversations and higher-stakes assignments. Global Femicide: Indigenous Women and Girls Torn from our Midst brings Canadian, Mexican and Guatemalan stories together to show that the interlocking systems of sexualized and racialized violence is not only a product of historic colonization but continues to be entrenched as deliberate systems of colonization and global femicide. Using reflections from Torn from our Midst: Voices of Grief, Healing and Action from the 2008 MMIW Conference, this book is uniquely situated to provide a decades-long retrospective on what, if anything has changed since the time of that conference. Roadblocks and successes are found in the chapters written by family members, scholars and researchers, artists, global activists and Canadian policy-makers.

This book is designed to be readable and approachable, taking an Indigenous feminist approach of including personal stories of family members as well as critical analyses of history, governmental policies, intimate partner violence and health, and intergenerational art activism. Issues around governmental manipulation in the Canadian Indian Act, Mexican families’ resistance to neo-liberal economics as it pertains to the vulnerability of women workers in maquiladoras as well as the rampant environmental crisis, and the devastation wreaked by complicit governments and police forces in Guatemala all have bearing on the specific vulnerability of Indigenous women. Book sections provide specific recommendations, such as the chapters on pedagogical and administrative transformation at the university level. The book is driven by the underlying question of how we can best prepare and support young adults in work that redresses structural colonialism and violence against women. Each chapter serves as a call to all global citizens to engage in the work of decolonization, reconciliation (or “setting things right” as Maria Campbell teaches us) and justice. The analysis and the heart of all the authors is generously shared, exemplifying what resistance looks like.

Dr. Caitlin Gunn and Dr. Caty Taborda created this trauma-informed, culturally responsive, gender neutral curriculum for people who have been impacted by domestic violence. It is offered here as an openly licensed educational resource.

Unlike most traditional domestic violence educational content, this curriculum was developed through an understanding of feminist, queer, and critical race theories. Lessons and group sessions refocus violent and toxic masculinities as the central cultural forces to be interrogated, understood, and challenged. This serves to provide maximum flexibility while also neutralizing language otherwise condemning and reducing individuals to identities of “abuser” and “victim.”

The curriculum is appropriate for ages 16 and up, with particular benefits for those ages 16 through 21. It is applicable to people and groups of all genders – women, men, non-binary and gender-fluid people, and mixed gender groups. It was designed for in-person facilitation (with printable handouts) but could be adapted for online settings.
