This course examines how children, families, schools, and communities collaborate with and influence one another. The course explores ecological theory to contextualize diversity and relationships among children, families, schools, and communities, linkages between family-school-community engagement and student achievement, and cultivation of culturally sustaining family and community collaboration. As you move through this course, I will challenge you to think about your own implicit, explicit, and confirmation biases about children and families. Sociologists study the family at a personal and larger social level. This is important to note because you experience both the personal and larger social levels of the family in your society every day--but until now, you might not have known that fact! The narrative in this textbook is intentionally personal. The material is intentionally selected in hopes that it will be useful in your personal and larger social life experiences. The book is also filled with answers to significant concerns and questions students often have about the family. Finally, this textbook is an excellent case study of the sociological analysis of the family in the United States. How we used the US statistics, trends, and historical facts used herein can be a useful example for you to do a similar analysis of your own country, state, province, county, or even city.

This empirically based curriculum addresses a number of issues related to disparity and disproportionality experienced by African American families involved with child welfare. It is well documented that for decades African American children have been overrepresented in child welfare throughout this country. Yet little is known about what strategies might be implemented in order to reverse this phenomenon. This curriculum is based on findings from a Community-Based Participatory Research Project that brought together African American community leaders and university faculty to examine both the historical evolution and prominent features of a cultural broker approach to promote engagement and partnership with the African American community and the county child welfare agency. This curriculum provides research highlights, historical perspectives, conceptual frameworks, approaches for community engagement, tools and experiential opportunities to strengthen social worker understanding, and knowledge and skills regarding issues related to disproportionality and disparity experienced by African American families in child welfare. It addresses five areas: the history of cultural racism and oppression in child welfare, the prevalence of racial disparities and disproportionality in child welfare, the role of community partnership and collaboration with African American families in child welfare service delivery, the cultural broker approach to community engagement in child welfare practice, and key considerations for improved child welfare partnerships with African American communities.
