Follow the Resource Link to read about “Our School District” (non-fictional), a small district that wanted to adopt NGSS-designed Science materials.
I was contacted in Spring 2018 to consult with Our School District. The district’s Science Specialist and I were both members of a regional science leadership network (LASER), and so we had previously shared with each other a number of science education interests, experiences, and problems-of-practice.
Vignette Presentation: two representations
The vignette's Outline Representation is a breakdown of how this PD program was engineered to provide an NGSS-designed science program and also transform several characteristics of Our School District’s science systems.
The vignette's Website Representation, Small SD Science PD, presents a chronological and organizational view of this vignette.
A few nuggets from this vignette:
bit.ly/OurSDSciCurrPrinc The "Our SD Science Curriculum Principles" were co-developed with teachers to provide long/short-term guidance in developing science programs and systems.
bit.ly/OurSDsciencePD The website platform supports science program continuity by archiving PD events, tools, and resources, making it easy to stay connected to where they’ve been, what they’re using, where they’re going.

The event includes high-profile speakers and breakout sessions that provide strategies for understanding equity through a trauma-informed practices approach. The site will provide access to speaker keynotes and breakout session recordings and materials from both. With consideration to current social movements in the U.S., as well as the recent advent of widespread distance learning, equity work is needed now more than ever. Our students deserve our highest-level of support.

Module I discusses effects of sexual abuse trauma on young children; describes the adverse effects of sexual abuse trauma and the role of past victimization experiences in motivating sexual acting out; includes a literature review; and covers affective, cognitive, and behavioral effects. Two practice models that explain the effects of abuse are discussed and compared, and an integrative treatment model is introduced. Module II discusses childhood sexual development, reviews research on sexual behavior problems in children, presents research findings about normative sexual development in children as well as criteria differentiating sexually abusive behavior problems from age-appropriate sex play, includes experiential exercises on sexual values, and reviews and discusses clinical and research methods used to classify types of children with sexual behavior problems. Each module contains learning objectives, suggested readings, an outline of issues addressed in the module, and suggestions for teaching the module in the classroom and in field practicum. Strengthening Innovative Library Leaders (SILL) is a 2-day foundational leadership training curriculum for librarians. The training was developed at the Mortenson Center for International Library Programs in partnership with librarians around the world. The project is funded by the Global Libraries Program of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
SILL is designed for public and community librarians, but can be used with other groups. This leadership training is meant to be delivered to everyone in the library, not just a select few. Equally important is that it is developed to be used by trainers with different levels of training experience and familiarity with the topic. Most importantly, it was designed to be easily adapted to the local library context and translated into different languages.
The training is divided into 4 interactive modules focusing on Leadership, Innovation, Planning, and Communication.

This program explores the correlation between the reduction of the incidence of substance abuse and the reduction of the incidence of child abuse. Estimates indicate that 40-60% of child abuse cases are substance abuse related; yet, meager resources and attention are directed toward alleviating the problem. This tape offers six elements that provide a framework for successful intervention with substance abusers. Three role-playing scenarios show how these elements are incorporated into situations that social workers encounter in the field, translating classroom learning into practice.
