Camelids have a similar digestive structure to other ruminants, although camelids only have three separate stomach compartments compared to the four found in domestic species. The first element of the camelid GI tract, known as C1, can be compared to the rumen whilst the second, known as C2 can be compared to the reticulum. The final element of the tract, C3 can be compared to the abomasum. Therefore camelids do not have a structure comparable to an omasum.

After completing the associated lesson and its first associated activity, students are familiar with the 20 major bones in the human body knowing their locations and relative densities. When those bones break, lose their densities or are destroyed, we look to biomedical engineers to provide replacements. In this activity, student pairs are challenged to choose materials and create prototypes that could replace specific bones. They follow the steps of the engineering design process, researching, brainstorming, prototyping and testing to find bone replacement solutions. Specifically, they focus on identifying substances that when combined into a creative design might provide the same density (and thus strength and support) as their natural counterparts. After iterations to improve their designs, they present their bone alternative solutions to the rest of the class. They refer to the measured and calculated densities for fabricated human bones calculated in the previous activity, and conduct Internet research to learn the densities of given fabrication materials (or measure/calculate those densities if not found online).

We take a look at the basic composition of blood. Blood is composed of liquids and solids. The solids are called the formed elements while the liquid portion is called plasma. The solids of the blood consists of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets . The plasma is mostly water, but it does contain some plasma proteins, dissolved gases, nutrients and electrolytes.

In this video take a look at hematopoiesis (haematopoiesis), or the creation of blood. While we are still embryos the formation of blood can occur in multiple sites. After birth production primary takes place in red bone marrow.

All blood cells that are circulating derive from pluripotential hematopoietic cells also known as hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). These stem cells can form any of the blood cells or other stem cells. Hematopoietic Growth Factor will help determine what the stem cell grows into.

There are three families that blood cells can grow up to become: 1) Erythroid cells, 2) Lymphocytes, and 3) Myelocytes.

Red Blood Cells also known as red blood cells (RBCs) or erythrocytes are around 7.5μm in diameter. The average number (red blood cell count) is typically:
*5,200,000 per cubic millimeter ± 300,000 men
*4,700,000 per cubic millimeter ± 300,000 women

Red blood cells are made of hemoglobin. When the hemoglobin combines with oxygen it is called oxyhemoglobin, when oxygen has been released it is known as deoxyhemoglobin. The RBC initially have a nuclei during the early stages of development, they then remove the nuclei to help make room for hemoglobin.

The lower urinary tract is the collection of organs which convey the formed urine from the kidneys to the exterior of the body. The urine is not altered in this part of the system in species other than the horse (where mucous is added) but instead its function is to collect and store the urine until enough of it is collected for release to become necessary. This gives the animal urinary continence. Three major structures make up this tract. The ureters, the bladder and the urethra.

Also referred to as the reticuloendothelial system or mononuclear phagocytic system. It is comprised of primary lymphoid organs (bone marrow, Bursa of Fabricius, the foetal liver and the thymus) which are responsible for the production of lymphocytes, and the secondary lymphoid organs (lymph nodes, spleen and mucosal associated lymphoid tissue) which function to provide an environment where lymphocytes can react to antigen from the tissue fluid, blood and mucosal surfaces.
