This interpretive listening activity focuses on time and basic activity verbs. It can also be used to expose students to the third person plural "they" verbs in a concept attainment activity, in which students attempt to deduce the grammatical rule or pattern for third person plural verbs based on the context.
Sample MISA High School Item Set for Energy Production and the Carbon Cycle covering standards HS-ESS2-6 and HS-PS1-4. These items focus on the bond energy involved in the combustion of hydrocarbons and the role of human coal combustion in the carbon cycle.Image source: "Carbon cycle" by Scottish Carbon Capture & Storage at www.sccs.org.uk
Sample high school MISA test item set which uses a physics and earth space science performance expectations. The Item set focuses on wind turbines and their environmental impacts. It contains 5 questions and one constructed response for a total of 9 points. (Image source: “Wind Turbine” by Painter06 at Pixabay.com.)
Phenomena: DDT was a commonly-used pesticide for insect control in the United States until it was cancelled in 1972 by the United State Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). DDT was initially used by the military in WWII to control malaria, typhus, body lice, and bubonic plague. Populations of fish eating birds, fish, plant life in certain ecosystems were affected by the use of this chemical and other similar ones.Storyline: Students at a school nearby the Delaware Bay noticed a change in osprey population. The students wanted to figure out why this was happening. The students decided as a class to research, collect data, and explain why the environmental changes were occurring.PE Alignment: MS-LS2-1 Analyze and interpret data to provide evidence for the effects of resources availability on organisms and populations of organisms in an ecosystemMS-LS2-4 Construct an argument supported by empirical evidence that changes to physical or biological components of an ecosystem affect populations. MS-LS1-7 Develop a model to describe how food is rearranged through chemical reactions forming new molecules that support growth and/or release energy as this matter moves through an organism
Phenomena:A car has run out of gas on the railroad tracks. It is stopped in the middle of the tracks and is blocking the lane. An oncoming train sees the car, applies the brakes but cannot stop and crashes into the parked car. Storyline: Students are playing with toys and notice that each time one car is moving and runs into another object that is not moving, the second object moves. Sometimes it moves far and other times it only moves a short distance. The students want to find out why toys move various distances when objects come into contact with it. PE Alignment: MS-PS2-1 Apply Newton’s Third Law to design a solution to a problem involving the motion of two colliding objects. MS-PS2-2 Plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object’s motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object.Image source: "UP 5525 Crosses Washington Street in West Chicago" by vxla at https://www.flickr.com/photos/vxla/4614440328 CC BY 2.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/)
Accessibility presentation presented at the Inspired Designer session. The session includes an overview of the legal requirements that must be met when creating or evaluating digital resources, and the various tools used to analyze websites and documents. Activities are included that allow participants to use their own devices to create Microsoft Word and PowerPoint resources that will be accessible to all students.
This presentation covers Copyright, Fair Use, Transformativeness and Creative Commons Licensing.

Unit Essential QuestionsDoes the student identify examples of change?Does the student understand the difference between before and after chemical changes using gathered data?Does the student understand the difference between before and after chemical changes by interpreting and analyzing data? Learning ObjectivesAs a result of this lesson, students will know and be able to:Interpret and analyze data on the properties of substances before and after chemical changes have occurred. (Please note: Physical properties/changes have already been studied.)Target LevelInterpret and analyze data on the properties of substances before and after chemical changes have occurred.Precursor LevelGather data on the properties of substances before and after chemical changes have occurred.Initial LevelObserve and identify examples of change.Teacher Planning, Examples of Response Methods and MaterialsSee Full Lesson Plan Attached

This unit is presented as a series of progressive tasks. Each learning task can be used to reach one or more of the applicable outcomes and may be taught as one lesson or part of a lesson. Teachers are encouraged to select learning tasks that best fit their teaching style and students’ needs. Modifications, accommodations, and extensions specific to your learners are strongly recommended. The suggested assessments are designed to give teachers ideas related to each task.Prior to the learning tasks, the standards, applicable exit outcomes, focus and subfocus skills/concepts, and critical skill elements are listed within the overview.Cover image: "Soccer" by monica_aulich from Pixabay.com AttributesGraham, G., Holt/Hale, S.
