While there are many gender-based barriers to education—socio-economic, cultural, and institutional—the project will focus on practical tools that individual teachers, directors, educators can put to immediate use in their classrooms, organization or even workplace. It addition, it contains key definitions related to gender and education, references to international commitments to gender equality in education, and a list of supplementary online resources and suggested reading materials.
We hope that this project will help to raise awareness, spark discussions, and encourage sensitive and productive learning environments for students of all genders and stages.

Una colección de textos para el debate

Short Description:

Long Description:

Context in some pieces of literature make or break the book. Though Of Mice and Men seems easy to read, the basis for the world of broken workers in a the broken world of The Great Depression is alien to the students of today who text, watch TV and drive cars to their High School Class. There are still poor in America, extremely poor, yet the majority of kids today have so much more than what the majority had during the Great Depression. The students' job is to present the daily life of the Depression from a common person’s point of view.

Prereading activities build vocabulary and comprehension skills, a read-aloud introduces students to the sounds of the story, and concluding exercises allow students to apply their understanding of phonic elements in other contexts. Depending on students' needs, this minilesson can be adapted to teach additional phonic elements using other authentic texts.

Phonological Awareness

Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear the separate sounds, or phonemes, in words. Phonemic awareness is a purely oral understanding and deals only with sounds – not letters. As soon as letters are introduced, we call it “phonics”. A more over-arching term is “phonological awareness”, which includes an awareness of parts of speech larger than phonemes – syllables and words for instance.   Research has shown that Phonological Awareness develops in a hierarchical manner, with the ability to complete some skills necessarily preceding others.
