Students will practice recognizing family member terms (i.e. abuela: grandma), describe family members, and accurately use vocabulary related to families in Spanish. They will acquire information about another individual’s family and will practice describing their own and others’ family members.

The Office of Head Start contracted to create the Early Childhood Learning & Knowledge Center as a repository to support all Head Start Program Guidelines. In this section, four briefs support Head Start programs and other early learning partners, including school districts, to create smooth transitions for children and families. Each brief focuses on a level of the transition: children and families, early educators (teachers, family child care owners, assistant teachers or paraeducators), early childhood education partners (school districts, state preschool, centers, and homes), or programs/ policies/ practices (alignment, tools).

Vocabulary – FamilyThis is an introductory lesson, but would also make a great review lesson for students of all ages and levels. In this lesson, your students will learn vocabulary related to immediate family members (mother, father, brother, sister, etc) and practice reading simple family trees. This lesson seeks to engage in discussions about relationships, emotional, and physical relatedness, and whether biological connections are the only connections that make a family. Understanding how society has traditionally defined family may not be the way we define it – and that’s okay. In this lesson, participants will expand their knowledge of a more involved family tree. When it comes to describing family/kinship, does a biological connection hold more weight, or do emotional connections that develop over time hold equal importance? Understanding relationships, values, and what resonates as important is helpful in practicing and engaging critical thinking skills.

In this activity, students will focus more on giving and completing a task. Students will be given a tree; each with words on the side. Students will create their own family tree and then will ask and answer questions about families.
