Course description:
This course addresses the general lab skills and knowledge required to function safely and effectively in an electronics laboratory or shop environment. The student will be introduced to concepts in electronic circuit assembly, wire termination, and soldering. Included is an overview of various electrical schematics and diagrams used in the design, assembly, and repair of electrical and electronic systems. The proper use of common lab equipment and hand tools will be covered. This is a hands-on course intended to give the student experience performing tasks that are best taught by practice.

In this activity about electricity, learners explore what happens when you blow a fuse. Learners short-circuit a battery using copper wire (a good conductor with very low resistance) and thin iron wire. Learners will discover that when they connect the clip to the iron wire, the voltage of the battery pushes electrons through the circuit against the resistance of the iron wire, causing the iron wire to heat up. Note: the wire gets very hot! Use this activity to introduce learners to basics of electricity including conductivity, resistance, and currents as well as electronics safety and circuit breakers.

This course focuses on a systematic approach to the design of analog electronic circuits. The methodology presented in the course is based on the concepts of hierarchy, orthogonality and efficient modeling. It is applied to the design of negative-feedback amplifiers. It is shown that aspects such as ideal transfer; noise performance, distortion and bandwidth can be optimized independently. A systematic approach to biasing completes the discussion. Lectures are interactive and combined with weekly sessions where students can work on exercises under supervision of the professors.
